Something like a Schwalbe Marathon (Plus) will handle gravel roads, fire tracks etc and be great on the commute too.
More tread = more capable offroad but slower running and faster wearing on road.
Maybe something with a low profile tread like a Conti RaceKing if you want a bit more grip off road without feeling like you're dragging a corpse on the road.
My Surly 1x1 had a Conti Raceking on the front and a Marathon on the rear for most of the summer and was used for commuting, forestry paths, bits of the west highland way etc.
I've got an old 26er (BSO really but essentially NOS) gifted to me from my Dad's recent shed clear out.
I'd like to use it as a back-up commuter but also have the ability to try a bit of moderate off-roaring, which for mean would mean anything that wasn't sealed tarmac!
So I'm thinking 'semi-slick' tyres, but I've never bought a MTB tyre in my life, what are people recommending?
