Is that not a freewheel as opposed to a freehub and cassette?.

0 chain whips

no chainwhips but a few firm whacks on the front with a hammer + penetrating fluid where it meets the hub always helps get them off

so i need one of these, held in a vice, then turn the wheel in the opposite direction to cycling?

I usually put the tool into the freehub, ensure it is held in place by using the axle nut if possible.
Place a spanner on the tool and apply some impact technology to the spanner with one of these.
i feel i should know how to do this but, how do i remove this cassette?
two chainwhips? or one chainwhip and one of these?
