• I was on my way home from Croydon at 5:00pm on Friday. Nearly home when a suicidal ped ran from the pavement at a controlled crossing (green lights in my direction, red man in theirs). We collided hard, I barely saw her before the collision. She ended up on her back passed out, an ambulance arrived and she came round, bruised but walked home. I was not so lucky. I'm typing this from a hospital bed having had a dozen stitches in my nose, lip and chin and a hole in my knee needed a proper operation to clean up.

The police have made it clear that there is no crime to investigate, witnesses corroborated the event. As always you can see why it happens, low visibility, someone does something stupid. If I'd been able to see her running on the pavement I could have avoided it. It's the biggest off I've had in my biking career and the lesson I learnt is simple.

A full face helmet and proper knee pads and I'd be sat at home now enjoying a beer and sleeping in my own bed. So wear your protective gear and stay out of hospital when the shit hits the fan or don't wear it and meet some nice doctors/nurses.

On the plus side I was wearing a Rukka jacket and I don't have a single scratch or bruise on the areas that was covering and the jacket itself looks fine, also a pair of steel toecap boots saved a few toes being sheared off.

  • I had a similar but less serious collision with a ped who ran across two lanes of stationary traffic to catch a bus whilst I was filtering, it was sub 15mph but I gave her (and myself) a shock. Glad you both will mend, get back on two wheels as soon as poss.
