i was ideally trying to make use of bits i have round the house
i have nice 3x9 xt shifters
i have a nice 9 speed rear block
i have a 9 speed rear mech but it's a bit twisted ( probably needs a new one ) and have an slx front 3x mech ( again a bit bashed ) ...
but
i thought a i was setting up the rock lobster i might get a little spendy on it and get some nice new bits
spoke to skinny erics mtb guru ! and he said don't bother with 3x as you never really use most of the gears, slx or xt were best value for money
now looking at this
