38x16 will probably be a bit big. I've been running 39x18 on flat, dry courses. Probably will go up to 19 or 20 on hillier, muddier stuff later in the season.
I believe central league runs a novice race earlier in the day, but if I was you I'd jump straight into seniors, more people to race and you (probably) won't be last.
Ive just been informed by a mate that my first foray into cross is going to be at Dunstable for the icknield hosted race of the central league. I guess I should be joining some sort of beginner race rather than the actual race? Anyone have any idea on what the course is like aswell? I'm currently on a tight clearance SSCX running 38/16...
