I fear you over estimate Chelsea's popularity. Every single person I spoke to that season would rather have seen Liverpool lift the title.

I don't know anyone on the face of the earth (other than their deluded, maniacal fans) who wanted Liverpool to win.
I'd nearly always rather see a London club (obviously other than Tottenham) win the league.
