• Awesome! Thanks. Great bits of info. Def want one badly now!

  • They're my parents' dogs but writing all that down made me realise how much I miss them! They really become part of the family, they've got a lot of personality.

  • Yep, just picking up. Anyway, here is the Pack Of Doom as pictured on Saturday: from left to right, Stella (2) Beamish (1) and Guinness (4) who also happens to be the somewhat reluctant father of Beamish.

  • Stella and Guinness. Strong names.

  • Beamish isn't so shabby...

    Nice looking dogs there, Colin

  • No flabradors there Colin. Beamish looks pretty steady

  • Lovely, where are they from? The cocker has a great colour. Here's another of mine

  • Aw lovely.

Going to view a dog on the weekend, miniature schnauzer.
Advert seems legit, but the are light on the details and not exactly answering my Q's.
Dog is KC registered, and chipped so that's good.

What should I be asking, looking for, etc?

Edit: Family pet, 2 yrs old, not puppy, parents not around to view.

  • both the bitch and sire, if possible. Def the mother. KC means jack shit, take some to learn what to look for.

  • What's their reason for selling/giving away the dog at two? At that age it should have had at least two rounds of inoculations, three if it's over 27 months. If I had to let my dog go at that age, I would be happy to pass on the vet's details to the prospective new owner so they could look into any past health issues. Check whether it's had regularl worm and flea treatments too.

Is it the only dog in the house? If not watch how it is around the other dogs. In any case, spend time just watching it without giving it attention. Does it look alert and interested? Is it nervous? Ask to take it for a walk with the owner and see how it behaves when out and whether it's confident. Watch it walking and running to check for any signs of lameness.

Find out what it's been fed on and whether it has any diet issues. What do you plan to feed it on,will you be able to change to that if you need to.

Where's it going to live at your place? Bed in a specific room, crate, outdoors? Is it used to sleeping the owner's bed? Does it go on furniture? Will you be happy with this in your house? If not, how easy will it be to retrain it?

There's loads of general stuff, plus the breed specific issues about which I have no idea. If the owner is evasive, gets impatient with your questions, doesn't want to spend time going through all this stuff, then walk. Don't be seduced by the cute dog...

I went to Sunderland four times before I got Herbie. The first time, I was there for over three hours and I was being vetted. That was over six months before the litter came.

Bottom line, if the owner is genuine and wants the best for the dog, they will have nothing to hide, and will be glad that you are being so thorough. Good luck!

  • Massive dog envy, if I was able to have one for myself one of these or a german short haired pointer.

  • This is Jalopy, he's a rescue dog from Greece, certain parts of Greece mix and match hounds, the vet over here thinks he's a Pointer/Beagle cross (and "apparently" you shouldn't mix those two up, one's a sighter, the other a sniffer)
He's a pain in the arse, when I'm at home , we will go on a two hour walk about 7, all around the fields here (Horsham) he still won't tire, he's a bastard, he will cover every inch of every field, and woodlands. ( I have been out with him once for 6 hours, and he ran flat out the whole time)
I have to trap/corner him to get him back on the lead.
When I am working away labouring etc.. he gets a quick 30 mins walk in the nearest woods on a lead.
The Mrs, will take him out on a Halti-lead with the pram a bit later.
Then at 6pm on the dot, he needs another run and poop.
He has such a great temprament.
He hasn't got a bad bone in his body.

    I love him to death.

It can be hard work, and I wouldn't leave him on his own for more than 4 hours, even though, he'd probably be sleeping if he has had a good runout earlier.

The Hound of the Bastard Villes.

  • thanks FBC, I just re-read the title, sorry for jumping in (as I live in Horsham), but I got carried away reading everyone talkin' 'bout their dogz.

Also, he won't go for a piddle or shite in our garden, so he has to go out for it.

But, if you are going to be away from the house for 8 hours a day, do not get a dog.
They are very social, being a pack animal.

  • He's a damn site better looking than you murtz

  • Herbie and friend

  • Ha, thnaks MB.x

  • if I was able to have one for myself one of these or a german short haired pointer.

Always wanted a GSP, but it'll never happen until I leave London.

  • sorry for jumping in (as I live in Horsham)

Go away and only come back when you've moved to Dogham.

  • Markyboy - so sweet.

Murts, he's awesome. My sis has a jack Russell / beagle cross not dissimilar and he is like the battery bunny too. Proper little attitude on him. Great dog.

Furious - come visit and you can try wearing out the little bugger....

  • Joe, the clocks have just changed so it's dark at 4.30 and only gonna get worse so the temptation to fly to enjoy the moderate climate you're soaking up is immense.

I was thinking the other day of things I'd like to do if my time and money weren't an issue and I decided I'd like to fly to visit Alb in Van BC, buy a stupid car, drive to Portland to see a couple of friend that now live there, then motor down the coast to San Fran for more social calls then floor it down to see you. Unfortunately Natalie West has other ideas :-(

You were the missing link at the leaving party the other night.

  • We've a black mini and she's great. Don't malt, cuddly, great with the new bambino too. Not so great with other dogs when on the lead but when off she just keeps away. Almost more cat like than pack like
