The BTR is kind of taking that short stem thing to the extremes really :-)
There's really not much difference in 'women's geometry' bikes. A lot of what manufacturers have done is fit lighter shock springs, narrower bars, thinner grips, etc... and then wrap it all up in a rubbish colour scheme.

Having gone through the process of speccing my girlfriend's mtb, I'd say just go for what fits, regardless of gender specificity OR wheel size.
if Dom's girlfriend has got on well with riding his mtb, then use that as a way of figuring out what to get.
But how would you get a shorter stem for the bike you posted up there ^^^^? If bikes are now sold with 80mm stem, you'll be wanting a 10/20mm to feel comfortable. I'm Trextastic so long top tubes are shit for me.
