Finally got around to taking some pics of the German Transporter (VSF budget rebuild):
It's an old VSF Fahrradmanufaktur T400 Rohloff frame that I got cheap at local bike recycler. Built up with V brakes, Alfine 8 rear wheel and suicide shifter (bar-end microshift mounted to quill top). Wheels, Tubus (and a full set of Ortliebs to match), plus some other stuff were aqcuired in a trade with @sykodrama who got my SASS in return. Must have been the longest bike sale mail exchange ever, what a nice chap. Built me a bomb-proof Alfine-XC17 rear wheel, which will be joined with a dynohub front to match in some distant, affluent future.
More immediate improvements-in-waiting include trimming the front (rear) mudguard, cooking up some mudflaps, and figuring out some less rattle-prone attachment method for the front fender. Plastic adapter thing to P-clip on the Tara rack works pretty well, but the plastic thing is def. weak link.
It rides oh-so-smoothly and tracks staight as an arrow, even on the near-worn out Maxxis Crosschecks that I had lying around. Yes @edscoble , there are plans for Compass RTPs in that same affluent future (hopefully spring).
It is also a perfect commuter, if you disregard the fact that my commute is three minutes by foot most days. /csb
Oh, yeah, and it has the slackest magic gear ever. Works.
