  • thank's guys !!

  • A few more parts have arrived. Need to cut the steerer at the weekend. And does anyone have any advise on using torque wrenches on carbon, is it really needed?

  • been feelin' a bit cross eyed of late tbh

thinking this will be a commuter/urban assault bike

will probably be an all american build, sram'd up, fell for the decor tbh, wheelset from the recent rabo c50 cx

  • You lucky bastard. Looks so new. So much envy.

  • i will use it whilst here in nl, quite a score, the frame alone is over 1000$ on evilbay.com, needs some kinda stem, luckily owner has and it's en route postaly
I travelled half the country to get it , two buses and four trains, the frame really drew attention on the return
once home saw a dent like my little finger nail on the nds by the bb underside, was sure frame was sound on inspection, stands me in about 100 quid, so can't moan too much and it has not affected the integrity of the frameset
hedshok may need service, and i have to try an figure out why the fuck it's got an image of what seems to be a youthful sid james on the forks
sid aside, they do like quite nice built up

  • torque wrenches on carbon, is it really needed?

Only on the parts you want to keep using.

  • Noice.

    Sid pic plz.

  • Cheers, that's a pretty clear yes.

Only having dealt with steel bikes before I just need assuring that one will be a wise investment.

  • Sid pic plz.

    Some people call him Brad

  • advise on using torque wrenches on carbon, is it really needed?

Always, buy a torque wrench, it's one of those tools that's worth buying.

  • Rad frames, those. Be careful with the headshok - not many spares around for that kinda vintage.

Might be worth posting it to Craig Mendon in the US if it needs real TLC. Lockout work ok? Does it cycle smoothly?

  • Do you have any recommendations? Might as well get a decent one if it's gonna save parts getting done in.

  • My preference is the park tool one which is very expensive (but last longer).

The Lifeline one look pretty decent, word of advice is to make sure you unscrew it every time you finish using it, otherwise it'll weaken the spring inside.

However I'm sure @mdcc_tester have some recommendation.

  • Do you have any recommendations?

If you UTFS, there's plenty of chat about what people use and recommend.

  • However I'm sure @mdcc_tester have some recommendation.

    In the #tester_approved thread

  • Cheers.

    Gonna get on reading now.

  • Finally got around to taking some pics of the German Transporter (VSF budget rebuild):

It's an old VSF Fahrradmanufaktur T400 Rohloff frame that I got cheap at local bike recycler. Built up with V brakes, Alfine 8 rear wheel and suicide shifter (bar-end microshift mounted to quill top). Wheels, Tubus (and a full set of Ortliebs to match), plus some other stuff were aqcuired in a trade with @sykodrama who got my SASS in return. Must have been the longest bike sale mail exchange ever, what a nice chap. Built me a bomb-proof Alfine-XC17 rear wheel, which will be joined with a dynohub front to match in some distant, affluent future.

More immediate improvements-in-waiting include trimming the front (rear) mudguard, cooking up some mudflaps, and figuring out some less rattle-prone attachment method for the front fender. Plastic adapter thing to P-clip on the Tara rack works pretty well, but the plastic thing is def. weak link.

It rides oh-so-smoothly and tracks staight as an arrow, even on the near-worn out Maxxis Crosschecks that I had lying around. Yes @edscoble , there are plans for Compass RTPs in that same affluent future (hopefully spring).

It is also a perfect commuter, if you disregard the fact that my commute is three minutes by foot most days. /csb

Oh, yeah, and it has the slackest magic gear ever. Works.

  • a perfect commuter, if you disregard the fact that my commute is three minutes by foot

This thread would be four pages long if we all only built the bikes we actually need

  • One for next summer:

  • I love this. Its brutal. Proper size too.

    Needs mudguard flaps.

  • Downtube is bent mate.

  • Thanks man. Its a 64cm seat tube by 58 topcm. So lucky to get something in my size.

Lets start the yellow bike club
