  • Yeah, I'm up for that! Lets get a date that works for everyone and I can work around that.

  • I'm going to be out of town n the 1st, annoyingly.

  • On an unrelated note anyone fancy a trip to Avon Gorge for some real climbing soon?

  • I'm well up for that!

  • Great to hear people are up for this idea. Sunday October 18th anyone? after that, the next Sunday I have free is Sunday 15th November...

  • Yep 18th is good for me. :)

  • and good for me too!

  • 18th it is. From Arch bermondsey, the ride is about 14 miles. I suggest starting from there, going up though dalston, down church road, up Holloway road past Hampstead heath, then north through Golders green. We can stop to pick up anyone who would like to join the ride along the way.

OR, we can all start somewhere more central, like Look Mum?

  • While working on the build, I rode due north up the edgware road, which is a straight line but full of traffic lights and a bit shit. I'm assuming starting east makes sense for most people?

  • So so so fucking good. So much fun. My winter nights are pretty much sorted now. Thanks @winnifred1849, without you, it would have been a long time before I found out about the new centre. You have my gratitude.
If you want to ignore Edgware Road and are coming from easts. Cut across Hampstead Heath from highgate and then Golders Green>Hendon (slice right across North Circular)>Colindale>Burnt oak. Avoids all major roads and is actually a really nice ride.

  • Yep, that's what I did when commuting from Dalston. It's nice getting the views from hampstead heath, then getting the views of Hampstead heath from Golders Green. Especially in the morning mist at 6am :)

Care to join us on the 18th?

  • As much as I'd frikking love to, I'll be out of the Country for a while unfortunately. If airlines refunded 100%, I'd be living at the centre for the next month. I've realised I'm pretty much back to square 1. No idea what I'm doing.

  • I think I may be able to do the 18th!!

Glad to hear it's so good @Chak.

  • Yeah, I'm down with that.

  • Anyone built an indoor wall in their garage or any wall outside? plywood fixings etc

  • danke, any past experiences of building one?

  • I've never made a climbing wall but done tons of timber framing using the same methods.
Invest in a big roofers square. Measure to the centre of your batons, add horizontal noggins between batons for extra rigidity. Measure twice, cut once etc and it'll be fine. Use a proper mitre saw if you can get one.
Use glue as well as screws on all joins.
8'x4' sheets are rarely true measurements and cheap ply is really hard to work with. Get 18mm Wisa board.

  • Good advice from Ed ^ there. I just finished building the Arch North climbing wall, if you look back through the thread there's some pictures of it under construction. more pictures on the instagram feed here https://instagram.com/archclimbing/

If you scroll down there's some of the internal structure before the ply went on.

We used 4" x 2" for the timber frame, with 600mm centers, and clad it with 18mm ply, wisa is great stuff but if you want to save money there are other plywoods that do just as well. We used fairly cheap malaysian stuff, which saved us a few grand on materials (we used over 1000 sheets so the price difference per sheet really added up) but also meant we had a bit more sanding to do.

How big is your planned wall? What will it be fixed to? Your header and footer are the most important fixings. We chemfixed everything at 800mm intervals into the concrete of the structure.

  • 4"x2" reminds me of that harry and Paul sketch https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T1UHwZS3FE8

I'm not too sure on size because I'm not at home at the moment, it will probably be attached to brick work and might only be limited to a small section of just a few bawls and possibly a complex finger board if I can make it or if not then just a few finger ledges, set as an overhang with the side panels also being utilised

  • If you can choose what size to make it, sheets of ply come at 1220 x 2440 mm, or 1.2 x 1.4 meters, so to make the most economical use of your material you could make the structure as wide as two or three sheets, saves on cutting and waste.

Is it a free standing brick wall, or the side of a house?

  • Heh, my missus is always banging on about making a wall at home.
Winni, where do you work? Are you just a freelance climbing wall builder?

  • @bashthebox I'm based in south london, but work all over. The climbing centre we just built is up in Edgware. Yes, freelance climbing wall, bookcase, theatre set builder :)
