• Jokes. I'm looking for 'correct posture/folding bike geometry', then for folders with road drops, and I end up finding this awesome figure from Dragon Ball.

Maybe if I go to the bike shop with the hoards of half-dead bikes, I could buy a folding/mini-velo with potential for this. Maybe the Raleigh 20 or one of the more modern folders with a higher frame/tube.

Looks like a modern Dahon would be ideal, but it doesn't need to be exact and would need to actually be safe enough to bomb about on. No point being perfect and totally useless as a bike.

All I need to do, is do better than this guy, and it will be the best out there....

  • That Corima @mdcc_tester posted is actually kinda close...

  • subbed on condition you make O-symmetric discs

  • That dragon balls bike has taken inspiration from Moulton bikes (The ‘AM’ logo on the figures right shoulder makes that very clear). The frame is very similar to the 1960s Moultons. The front suspension is taken from the Moulton TSR. Rear suspension fork setup is a bit of a mashup of the early (f-frame) and modern (spaceframe) Moultons. A number of Moulton enthusiasts have taken the early Moultons and converted them to be more modern/racier (something not too dissimilar to the Dragon Balls bike). Note, Moultons do not fold but the Spaceframes (and f-frame Stowaways) split in two.

Here is a picture of an original (very rare and desirable) sporty f-frame. Cost of a regular f-frame is not too bad with deals to be had. Would be ripe for a conversion, though it does take a lot of work (no standards (thread counts, OLD etc) back in those days).

If folding is what you’re after, a Birdy with drops may do the trick though I have read that drops on a Birdy mess up the handling.

  • No cheating - those are clearly chopper-style hi-risers, cut off at the top of the curve, with drops welded on the ends.
If you track down the high rise risers, I will donate the drops - and maybe even stick them together for you... if you trust me ;)
I also have a dahon espresso folder that needs a new purpose in life, and it could look similar to that if it had 20" wheels maybe? BB might just be too low though? I'd be happy to pass it on cheaply, and it would be fitting to start with a japanese bike as your base ;)

  • Definitely doesn't need to be a folder, something tells me if I fibreglass/whatever the shell it won't be easy to fold any more anyway.

The Moulton looks awesome, but I appreciate price is high @Bärli_Bär.

Yes! The drops will be a little insane, and thanks for the offer @jdmitch!

Gonna have to seriously look into budget and timeframe now, aren't I?

  • If it doesn't need to be a folder, what do you need? Do you just want a compact bike, or something that's easy to travel with?

If the latter, you could get something like a Ritchey Breakaway?

  • Considering the model and the pictures, I think it needs to be a bike with a very compact geo, but very small wheels. I don't fancy going smaller than 20", and at that size there are a few frames out there. The thought about a folder was that many of them have the main tube of the bike raised, and some indeed have a similar shape.

I've yet to work out a budget, but I'm not sure how serious this will be. I'd prefer to start at a very low cost, use a junk (but solid) old shopper and build on top.

It needn't be that easy to travel with. If this turns out to be a fun-to-ride bike then it's going to be a summer/fun bike. If it turns out to be epic cosplay then it will need someone with a big display case.
