That method is actually pants, drawing the bearing all the way through the BB shell is going to shorten the life of the shell!
It is actually dead easy with a hammer to remove the bearings and a threaded bolt and suitable sockets to replace. It takes a bit of nerve though!
Having said that I have 1992 Performance which still has the original bearings, and it was my winter and club run bike for many years, they fitted very high quality bearings in the factory.
