  • I mean the context of the article/column/writer. Is it a mischievous gossip column?

  • Yes.

Edit: specifically a mischievous gossip column about the comings-and-goings in the House of Commons, in a highly mischievous magazine.

  • Who often have their finger on the pulse...

  • Yes I agree the first part does not quote it's sources. I guess you have to use your own judgement on the reliability of the Eye's sources on that one.

The second part does however quote Tom Watson:

Tom Watson, Corbyn’s deputy, told the BBC last week that the noble baroness would be “most welcome” in the new model Labour Party.

So yes, she is neatly equated with Corbyn et al, as you say.

  • Fair enough, I've read PI before but I'm not familiar with the specifics.

  • Who often have their finger on the pulse...

I agree, and they do good investigative journalism, I'm very glad we have them, and long may they continue. But at the same time they do specialise in scuttlebutt, and that column in particular is scuttlebutt central. That doesn't mean that it's always untrue, but it is definitely mischievous. I think that they would probably bear that label quite proudly.

  • Whatever the truth of the specifics, I think Corbyn has alot of work to do to convince the Jewish community he can bring an unbiased approach to the Israel / Palestine conflict.

  • At the great risk of starting something much larger, I think Corbyn's approach is unbiased. To blindly support Israel no matter what they do (as is US and therefore UK policy), is biased towards Israel.

  • ^This

Annnnd many thanks @bothwell for introducing me to the word scuttlebutt

  • The Freinds of Labour group disagree, based on this speech.

    https://www.politicshome.com/party-politics/articles/news/jeremy-corbyns-full-speech-labour-friends-israel-reception

He does not directly voice any bias, but nor does he address any of the concerns that Jewish people have about the security of their community in britain or elsewhere. For them, this is a big step backwards. I know this forum is mainly leftist / anti Israel, so Corbyn's position will likely be welcomed here. However I can't see him progressing far as an international figure if he is this divisive on a domestic level.

  • The second part does however quote Tom Watson:

Tom Watson, Corbyn’s deputy, told the BBC last week that the noble baroness would be “most welcome” in the new model Labour Party.

I wouldn't describe Tom Watson as a Corbyn et al.

  • You see no connection between Corbyn and his deputy leader? I didn't realise disunity in the party had got that bad...

  • Watson is not Corbyn's appointment neither is he Corbyns deputy. He's the elected deputy leader of the labour party. Some times he will tow to Party line, some times he will not.

  • It's not exactly surprising that a pro-Israel group aren't too happy with someone who disagrees with them.

This conflating of Jews and Israel is unhelpful on all sides too.

  • My point is Corbyn needs to get better at communicating with those he disagrees with. With his speech, he clearly failed. I'm not making a pro or anti Israel point here.

  • So anti Israel, as anything that isn't pro Israel is automatically anti.

  • That's not your point at all though, is it?

  • @snottyotter all sides of this debate are guilty of making the assumption that anyone who doesn't support them, is against them. That's why diplomacy in this area is so hard.

  • Hard area.

  • No, you're a hard area.

  • Yes, it is.

  • Some times he will tow to Party line

Do you mean toe the party line or kowtow to the party?

  • I'm so disappointed in myself. I'm leaving the original post up there as a reminder to get a better education for my children.

  • He does not directly voice any bias, but nor does he address any of the concerns that Jewish people have about the security of their community in britain or elsewhere.

Any position in the Israel-Palestine situation that offers security for one community comes with constraints and restrictions on the other.

You correctly point out that he does not voice any bias, but then are complaining that what you want is for him to voice a position that is favourable to one party and is in fact a position of bias.

You're basically upset because he's being fair and reasonable... presumably because you do not wish fair and reasonable behaviour to be any part of this, you just want a pro-Israel position at the expense of fair and reasonable.
