I think the first half is framed in a way that purports to be drily stating facts rather than the unsubstantiated and biased gossip it clearly is.
The second part then neatly equates someone who is clearly batshit with Corbyn et al. -
I mean the context of the article/column/writer. Is it a mischievous gossip column?
