Half the lorries in London are empty. More than thirty recycling companies have lorries servicing Regent Street alone. Vans and lorries trundle round the capital carrying water as good as that which comes from a tap. Laundry is carried in lorries to facilities in the outskirts cos it's cheaper. Thousands of largely pointless journeys. As long as career criminals like Barry Meyer can stroll into a lorry firm and get a job despite having no licence it seems a bit daft to ask cyclists to modify their behaviour.

The river is much under utilised resource. I'm sure it would be complicated, but more of London's freight should get to the centre on a boat and then be distributed by van within the centre. They could knock down something that could easily be placed further out (city hall?) and build a nice urban port.
I often see the barges carrying rubbish being towed down the Thames on their way to a processing plant in Wandsworth. A similar thing is done with concrete. Makes so much sense, but should be done with more stuff.

It's cheaper to use road freight, coz the real costs are not borne by the operators. The external costs of pollution, road degradation and injuries and deaths. The HGV companies don't pay. We do.

I think those stickers are fine too. I mean, of course we do our best to NOT be idiots as cyclists but then lets not forget that there are some cyclists out there who may actually need such a warning. Now we just need to have stickers on our bikes saying "DONT BE A DICK BEHIND THE WHEEL" for all those awful motorists out there that dont give a fuck about us.

There's a hell of a lot that could be done to help the city's infrastructure, agreed, but none of these things are as cheap, immediate or simple as putting a warning sticker on the back of a lorry. There's far better things to worry about - unlicensed drivers being able to get work is a particularly apt one.

It wasn't dangerous for me, because I was alert to the fact that it was indicating to me that it was turning left. It was dangerous for the people who ignored the indicator and carried on.

Or are they saying keep an eye out when you're passing on the inside?
You might not need telling that it's worth taking care when you're passing on the inside, some people clearly do.

i'll take 'an industry that habitually employs provably dangerous individuals as a result of an almost non-existent system of checks and balances on their suitability to operate a 20 ton vehicle with demonstrably poor design in the public domain' for ten.

I'd says it's simply that those HGV were designed to travel on motorways from facility to facility.
The market have changed, but the vehicles haven't.
HGV are not allowed on country road, but perfectly fine on small residential street.

Does that absolve responsibility of cyclists passing left-indicating vehicles on the inside?
Two scenarios:
- A lorry ahead of me is indicating left. I wait, the lorry turns, I continue.
- A lorry ahead of me is indicating left. I continue travelling on my path as if it is not there, and get knocked off.
Who has created the danger there?
Presumably if you were indicating right and somebody on a bike overtook you, you would be annoyed?

If a driver is in the outside lane, indicating they wish to turn left and another driver is in the inside lane proceeding straight on who has created the danger in scenario 1 and 2?
In both cases it is the driver who is turning left.
So now lets consider a cyclist in a cycle lane wishing to go straight on and a left indicating vehicle, who is creating the danger?
In both cases it is still the driver wishing to turn left.

You could argue the same for cars, they're fucking dangerous too.
We do kinda need to eat though, and it's rather difficult to bike food into a city for a population of 10 million.
