• New Kumo, builder out of Australia.

The dude got the bike last Saturday and pretty much took it on an 200k + overnighter.

  • I like the forks. The cable routing for the headlight is elegant.

  • I got a mild telling for posting this in the fat bike thread (although it nearly qualifies), and it's not a 29er (although the rolling diameter is the same as one), so I won't post it there, it's not strictly 650b, and I don't want the stress of starting a new thread, and getting flamed for my ignorance, so I'm putting it here......
The new Marin pine mountain 1, is 650b PLUS :0)
I think I have secured one for when they finally land in this country.....much pleased! Cycle2work voucher will be aquired, then given over till it gets here....and as I'm between sizes, he will be getting two in for me to try .....this was a concern too.
    Dat ass!

  • It is nice. I wonder if 650+ would fit in the Spearfish...

  • It's the plus bit that might cause an issue....as well as the boost axle arrangement! I am stuck with standard QR on the 'fish.....not that I have a problem with that, it's just there are no people making new wheels in that old outdated configuration! When the time comes, I'm sure I can get some built for it. My buddy has just built some WTB scraper rims with the fat WTB tyres for his new Stantons....I hope to try those in my frames for future reference...

  • It does. Friend tried it for a while, did a write up with pictures of clearance and everything. Can't find it now though...

    Edit:

  • Ooh.... Now you've got me thinking!

  • Might have to give it a go, once there's a bigger tyre/rim selection available.

  • It looks like a bunch of these retro MTB frames can take huge tires, are they all able to accommodate such big tires? I'm looking to build up one for cheap - my student oyster just ran out and public transport is a bit of a blow.

  • These are my favourite kind of bikes, currently building my newest one, for a stab at the Mawson Trail, 900km of dirt from my city into the outback. Here are some photos of my old touring bike and my lady's when we toured around Kangaroo island.

  • can we pls see a pic without the board!

  • Update....
After a last minute change of plan/heart, and reading that the Marin was nearly 32lbs as standard, I have managed to track down a shop that will take my voucher and obtain a trek stache 5 in my size ......boom, trigger pulled :0)

Ever since I saw the krampus in 2012, I have wanted/been trying to justify a 29+ rigid bike, and no matter what the industry is telling me with all this 650+ stuff, for now, this is an itch that needs scratching! And scratch the bugger I will! I pick it up around the 8th of November, all being well, and will give it a jolly good seeing to over the course of the following 4 days!
@BareNecessities I tried to get the 7th off work to pick this up and get down to epping for its maiden voyage, but there is no chance :0(... Next time though, and I'll have it dialled in by then :0)
    Very happy!

  • Marin was nearly 32lbs as standard

I guess something had to give, at that price.

  • Yeah, I am a bit sad at that tbh.....although I could never have both! I'm made up with my final choice though, and I think I have read everything that has been written about it on the webz!
The stache should come in at about 25lbs, according to some dude in the comments section (don't read the comments!) on the evans website, but even if it's a bit over, going tubeless straight off should sort a fair bit of that. I'm no weight weenie, as you know, but I have this barrier of 30lbs in my little OCD head!

  • I just seen a review of the trek, the top of line stache 9 mind, and it was like 29lb... You should reconsider the weight weenie thing

  • I've read that too....this one has rigid carbon forks though, not the big, heavy bouncy bouncy things! Anyway, other 'merican reviewers say 27.8lbs....that's the one I'm taking as gospel ! ;0)

  • Oh that Trek looks bangin'!

I miss my ECR, but simply couldn't justify keeping it in London. Itching for some mtb though for the winter... Oops! Not off road thread. Ignore me. Always found that 29 was a bit big for my smallish stature. If the Stache was 27.5+ I'd be all over that shit.

  • Scott Scale 710

  • Bit ugly innit! Good reviews, mind. Trek is especially good for me cause I get fat discounts on Trek. So will basically only buy a Trek. Or a Mondraker, or a Spesh. Anyway, derail.

  • Ain't no showstopper that's for sure. Their Genius tuned 27+ stuff is making me salivate though.
I really really want to rationalise a Trek 920. Monster Monsteur ultimate. Weird Geo though.

  • Look what you've done to this thread now, @stedlocks

  • I want to apologise, but......

Stache 5 in less than a month!!!

    :0)
