Clarks make decent cables, chains and brake blocks at budget prices: you can get them via eBay or a bike shop.
Being French, Peugeot did make their bikes to (the now defunct) French standard: notably the headset & bottom bracket threads and diameter of the handlebar stem.
However, bikes for the UK market were made to the (now universal) British standard and by the late-Eighties they had completely adopted it, so it's unlikely to be a problem for you.
The only exception to this, is the diameter of the seatpost: it will likely be 25.4mm (from memory), which is smaller than is common. Hopefully you got a seatpost with the frame, but it will be an old-fashioned "bullet-nose" type with a separate clamp to hold the saddle.
If you want to replace it with a modern post with an integrated clamp, the only (economical) option is this one from Decathlon.
Sheldon Brown and the Park Tools blog are two good sites to familiarise yourself with the names of parts, basic mechanics and potential problems/incompatibility.
