Did first recce for the Spine on Saturday- circa 50 miles from Edale to Hebden Bridge. It was amazing going across Saddleworth Moor at night, a bit spooky especially at one point when the hairs on the back of my back stood up as I sensed something was looking at me, turned and my head torch picked up the reflection of eyes in the dark about 20m away staring right at me! Then I saw more eyes- all looking at me, was convinced that I was about to be attacked by a pack of wolves- then I realised they were sheep!

They might just have been wearing sheep's clothing...

I will have that thought in my head for next time.

The reason that you never hear people talking about wolves they spotted on their run is because they never make it back in order to post about it.
HTH.

I'm now back from running in various places around Iceland and I can confirm that it's not shorts and vest weather over there (temperatures around 5 degrees, WIND, rain, hail, snow). Yesterday 65 km/h gusts of wind nearly blew me into Reykjavik harbour and I had to shelter behind a skip for a minute to try to regain the mental fortitude to carry on running. Quite fun, really.
No wolves though. -

"Yet" is the word missing from the end ;)

Iceland sounds like an ideal Spine training place- can you get there cheaply?
-
• #11734
I went a few years ago and although the flights were reasonable I don't remember anything else being cheap. Lovely though.

any of our ultra runners got some good training plans?
This should do the trick...

Pretty cheap to fly and actually I didn't find it that expensive there. Eating and drinking out is, I guess, but I don't drink and am vegetarian so was very limited in what I could have. I think prices within tourism are tied to the euro so if eating whales and puffins and sharks and stuff like that is up your street then now is probably a good time to go.
It's a beautiful and intriguing country but the weather is quite fierce. There's 12 hours of daylight at the moment and a day can contain every weather you can imagine, one after another. Not many runners (as in, I saw none and I got some very odd looks) outside of Reykjavik and I wouldn't recommend running on the roads as icelandic drivers are cray cray and tourist drivers are a menace.
It is bloody lovely though. -

Didn't that lead to injury and illness last time though?
nope, that was the flu I picked up the night before running the brighton half which did me in at the end of feb when I was only halfway through the hansons plan. the flu then turned into a full blown chest infection after i did a further 2 halfs and 2 full marathons on it.

I'm guessing this is the Hal Higdon plan I keep hearing about right?

I found it on FB and it's supposedly an early 19th century training plan, so yeah probably some of his earlier stuff :-)

All the basics are there- 100m + per week, some speed work, lots of protein and carbs and plenty sleep.

No mention of calf-guards or Strava segments tho?

Hi,
Does anyone know a nice place somewhere (preferably north) of London where I could put up some miles for "long" weekend trail runs (25/30k).
Something like:
- approximately 1h from London by train
- mostly trail
- some step climbs
Anyone willing to share this kind of route would receive all my gratitude!
Thanks guys,

Epping Forest?

Doggers rather than wolves will be the issue there.

Just checked it. That could do the trick for a few runs. Thanks!
@user49586 I have learnt a new word today...

I never knew there was a running topic!
I used to hate running and to a certain extent still do. I train mostly on the treadmill in the gym at work. I tend to do about an hour each day at the moment. I'm running a half marathon on Sunday and potentially have a London marathon place with work but nothing confirmed yet. I tend to normally run 3 times a week at work then a run at the weekend preferably off road.
I cross train with calesthenics and various body weight exercises plus 3 yoga sessions per week and 2 classes called cx worx. Have really cycled for ages!!!!

Trying to slow my long runs down and keep HR around 160bpm (a fast 5k averages about 175bpm usually). Mildly frustrating but, unsurprisingly, it feels a lot less horrible.

That's the ultra perspective, slow things down and go further.
