Could disappear down a sink hole.

There was a great compilation of sinkholes on the BBC news app this morning - made even better by the weird sci-fi music they had playing in the background. Basically a whistleblowing editor at the BBC is trying to warn us about aliens. Or sutin.

Alien invasion was second in my list of things that could go wrong at this stage.

I have this flatroof on the extension; its not leaking but I'd like to get it re-proofed if I can. Is it as easy as buying and applying a product? If so which?

Hard to tell from the photo, but I'd hazard a guess that it's been used as a roof.

Unless you've got money to chuck around, I'd leave it be. It shoes no obvious signs of disprepair - localised sagging/staining being the two that have affected mine after 28 years.... with the accompanying minor leaks I've recently painted it all over with Flexacryl and will get another winter out of it....

Re-proof it and it'll probably start leaking. Welcome to home ownership.

That costs extra

Leave it alone. Not leaking, so leave it alone. The sealing liquids are handy when there is a problem that you can't solve otherwise leave it alone.

Put it in the wash with some Granger's.

Pulling up my carpet to have a look at what the state of the boards is today, to hopefully sand and oil. I immediately find myself out of my depth. The hearth is in place from the old fireplace. What are my options for removing this, and placing some reclaimed boards over the top. It sounds pretty hollow underneath, but I don't want to knock it out and bring the chimney stack down on my head....

Pro tips for painting a carpeted room? Never done it before but armed with internet knowledge.

I am such a DIY noob. Plus without a car and driving license everything is a logistical nightmare.

@diable there is a worse one at the end that needs replacing .. its a slide in type; no idea where to get one that will be delivered.

I am luring mates who know DIY with slow cooked meat and beer.

It's not supporting the chimney breast at this portion. You can drill pilot holes to a few inches thick and then bolster the top layer of the structural hearth a way to allow you to fit boards above. Or borrow an SDS chisel.

Note that some new pine is quite light, soft and flaky, unlike your old pine boards.

Yeah, I'll be sourcing some reclaimed boards to replace a couple of fucked ones. Annoying thing is I have a couple of new boards that only went in a couple of months ago, I'll have to decide whether to replace them, or try and get them color matched. I'll be oiling the whole lot with polyx white after sanding.

If it leaks there will be marks on the walls or ceiling somewhere. Painting carpeted room - put sheets over the carpet, furniture in the middle of the room and sheets over that.

FYI Mybuilder is working amazing compared to others (rated people mainly). Such a good site; shame the rose is designer AND front end dev otherwise would love to work with a nice service/product like this.

Yep I smashed my old one out and let in reclaimed boards over the top.

Cool. Going to get going in it this afternoon. I would have had to have lifted boards there anyway to lay trunking for data cables etc.

Here are the new boards in amongst the old. I think I'll see how they come up once sanded and oiled, of they really look shit I can swap them out later
