• Hi,

I recently bought an old 1980's Peugeot Road Racer Bike. It needs a fair amount of work: new brake cables, new chain, new tyres and inner tubes etc. and I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on sourcing the parts? And will it be difficult to find parts because it is an older model?

    Thanks :)

  • Hi, try http://www.peugeotshow.com, the website lists all (or most) Peugeot road bikes from 1926 onwards, bikes from the 1980's are listed with pics, specs etc, as for the parts, Huret, Stronglight Simplex, Mafac etc, try Ebay, hilarystone.com, good luck searching for parts keep checking websites daily. Regards

  • Sheldon Brown and the Park Tools blog are two good sites to familiarise yourself with the names of parts, basic mechanics and potential problems/incompatibility.

Clarks make decent cables, chains and brake blocks at budget prices: you can get them via eBay or a bike shop.

Being French, Peugeot did make their bikes to (the now defunct) French standard: notably the headset & bottom bracket threads and diameter of the handlebar stem.

However, bikes for the UK market were made to the (now universal) British standard and by the late-Eighties they had completely adopted it, so it's unlikely to be a problem for you.

The only exception to this, is the diameter of the seatpost: it will likely be 25.4mm (from memory), which is smaller than is common. Hopefully you got a seatpost with the frame, but it will be an old-fashioned "bullet-nose" type with a separate clamp to hold the saddle.

If you want to replace it with a modern post with an integrated clamp, the only (economical) option is this one from Decathlon.

Have a read of this thread, it should be useful.

  • The bike isn't that old so you will find all the parts online.

A Jagwire brake/gear inner/outer cable set is about £7 posted on eBay. You can choose loads of different colours.

Chain / tyres / bar tape / brake pads will be available on Chain Reaction or Planet X at a very low price.

You will need to buy some 0000 wire wool and some steel polishing paste for the chrome and alloy but you can get that cheaply on eBay/Amazon.

    Put some pictures up!

  • I have a Pug from around the 80s/90s I believe and the seatpost is 24mm! they are pretty hard to find - although i have had my eye on this for a while and will probs get one towards the end of my project. Any advice on if this is a stupid idea would be highly apprceiated haha

  • bought a pug off ebay that came with one of those. works well but not the best looking seatpost ive seen...

  • Thank you! I'll try and put some pictures up soon :)

  • These Peugeots are hardly rare but if they're treated nicely I always think they look smart. Have renovated a couple myself.

...which is probably why I have a spare seatpost in that bloody awkward size. For sale here if anyone needs it. I can provide the clamp too.
