Is there such thing as an OTP complete with non-shit brakes, for under £1000.
I'm tossing up between road bike and CX to go on some longer rides around kent that won't leave my knees in shreds.CAADX is currently in the lead in terms of CX but I'm hearing loads of bad things about the brakes.
Raleigh RX Comp is up there too but finding it hard to find any proper reviews on it.Any recommendations.

Is the sub£1k thing for cycle2work?
and regarding Raleigh, can't speak for that bike in particular, but in general they're solid bikes, usually they scrimp on certain parts so those wheels on the rx comp will likely be pretty poor. Once you go up one more level to the Cole wheels, things get much better.

nah. cant really afford that much but could just about make it work.
cant afford nor justify payin much more -

Surly Straggler does most of that except no crabonz fork and it costs a bit more. Frame only then build it on teh cheaps?
CAADX will do all of that - in a sale - but it aint steel
Genesis might do something...but not for £1000 I'd have thought.

Can always sell the Straggler fork and replace it with it Kinesis DC37.
It's almost half the weight O.o ( 625g vs 1150g )

Indeed. We need a straggler fork for a crosscheck that needs revitalising.

Am planning on a CX bike on the company's cycle scheme, so has to be sub £1k
Caadx 105 seems the obvious choice, but I do like the look of the Norco Threshold. Similar build, and I like the orange/black finish.
Also considering the Planet X XLS 105 build now that it has dropped back below the magic £1000 mark.
Anything else now available that I should look at? -

Depending on what you're looking for - I got Pinnacle Arkose 2 on CTW and its been great, not exactly a cx race bike but great fun and versatile. I think the 3 - which has STIs rather than a bar end comes under the £1k mark too.
Possibly also relevant @Dakin

The brakes on the CAADX can be remedy with compressionless housing.
With careful set up I actually find the brakes to be fairly decent, just the fact they supply it with normal cable housing let it down.

Money not an issue ehat's the best disc braked cross bike that could be used on the road as a winter trainer?

Both good but I'm prolly gonna get something from one of the big brands. Because discounts.

The CAADX I've built (2015 model) doesn't feel like it's actually compressionless.
-
• #3547
if i swapped the housing alone, would that make much positive difference?

Jus havin a look at the Arkose 2 now actually.
Very decent. Weirdly 2, 4 and 5 are hydraulic and 3 is mechanical.2 is atually lookin real decent. Not keen on bar end shifter mind or the shit as colour.
also he says you can't have it because you'll put brakes and a rack and full mudguards on it.
