• Another question about my Mather build....
The frame came with a stronglight delta headset, the bottom race is cracked and if I'm honest I'm not a huge fan of how it looks. So I'm in the market for a new one. This got me thinking, do I stick with threaded or make the move to threadless? I know it'll be a case of new headset, fork and stem but it's not a bike I ever plan on getting rid of so don't mind a little extra initial expense, other than a weight saving is it worth it? Or am I being silly and should stick with quill?

  • Quills are great if you want to keep the classy vintage look, I myself prefer quills, but I use threadless ones as they're easier to source and hell a lot of options to choose from.

Edit: With the Mather frame, I'll stick with the quill stem. Cant see that having a threadless one ^_^

  • I do love that classy vintage look you speak of and have a beautiful hidden bolt stem in the parts bin, but something still draws me back to threadless

  • Threaded/quill for looks.
    Ahead for function.

  • The issue with going threadless will be sourcing a decent 1" headset, don't mind spending the money for something that will last, but finding it isn't easy

  • I believe Chris King make 1" threadless headsets, which will last, and for which you will spend money.

  • The Chris King does seem to be the way to go, going to speak to a local frame builder about changing the steerer on my 853 forks tomorrow
