  • Pro tip, brothers and sisters; When getting an external usb 3 enclosure for an SSD - make sure it's UASP (Usb Attached SCSI Protocol). This differs from the normal bulk storage protocol in that it can queue data while operating instead of a one in, one out policy.

Its the difference between 190 and 430 mb/s.

Also, it requires an Intel Ivy Bridge or later chipset to get full bandwidth.

I accidentally ordered the non-UASP version of an enclosure as they are identical and only differ with an "E" in the model number. New one is on the way.

  • Just got a new phone, restored from backup - but I'm not getting my wifi passwords on the new phone, nor are some of my contacts displaying properly - my other half, for instance, is appearing as her name in text messages but it's only displaying her number on the notification/home screen.
Any idea what I've done wrong? Went from ios8 to ios9 with the new phone too.

  • I've got the SMS displaying as numbers, not a name, bug too. Started happening when I updated the OS.

Not noticed any other bugs, but will be keeping an eye out for a solution to that one.

  • El Capitan beachball looks funky.

  • I'm enjoying it.

Working from home today so using PS AI and IND a lot... no problems s far, rock solid and fast.

  • Yeah, same tbh. It says something that my only 'issue' so far is that the beachball looks different.

  • Is 'Metal' incorporated yet and what exactly does that mean?

Do software developers have to make updates that we download? I.e. for Premiere am I going to have to wait for Adobe to catch up or will it just be a bit faster already? Adobe I imagine would be a quick wait but what about game developers? Will more games be ported to OS X? Will current games need Metal patches or will they work more efficiently without updates?

    Teach me.

  • Games? Macs? You high bro?

  • From what I understand games will need to be rewritten with metal. OS X is now using it but I don't know who else has joined the fun. Feels to me it's all part of apples plan to do away with discrete gpus altogether.

  • I'm glad that TRIM support for 3rd party SSDs is now in OSX.
Just jump in to the terminal and type "sudo trimforce enable".

  • sudo make me a sandwich.

  • Rewritten? LOL. So DayZ is a bootcamp special for the time being. (Apart from my creepy dreams etc).

  • Yeah, I don't really know much about all that but I remember asking the same question as you did and finding an answer or "has to be written with/in metal" or something to that effect. Yep, bootcamp only for a long time. I miss the infected too atm.
Couple of solid days on this new iMac, work and play, it's mental good. Ordered some more ram to really max it out.

  • You got the non retina one in the end right? How's it working out? Specs?

Mine went on hold until I move (will need to do the kitchen at the new place etc) and probably until I pay tax in Jan. After that I'm on a buying mission.

  • Yeah not retina. It's amazing. The 775m 2gb and the 780m 4gb are really good cards and the i5's are solid, mines the 3.4 ghz version with 2gb Gtx 775m and a fusion drive. Lots are listed at 1400 odd but you can pick them up for 1k which is decent IMO. I paid 1.1 and had it delivered to my door by a decent chap. The 775 is on par with the m290x I believe but as its non retina the gpu isn't as taxed. Played borderlands at 1440 last night maxed out and it was smooth as hell. Also glad I didn't split the fusion drive as I have 70gb of apps (that might include games but not sure). I can't be happier to be honest, although my impatience resulted in me missing out on some better auction deals.

  • Oh, also, once I wrote it off as a Bussiness expense my tax bill went down by £200 or so. Win win.

  • Before enabling TRIM, I was getting write speeds of 160 MB/s... Now this:

  • Ta for all this. Good for thought. Though still might opt for the retina version simply for more screen real estate. we work with 4k video a lot but not enough to justify a set of Mac Pros and 4k monitors. The iMac 5k seems a good compromise.

  • Sounds like the 5k will be the best choice for you - there might even be a cheeky update of them by the end of the year so keep your eyes peeled.
As much as the 5k screen sounds amazing I was worried it would kill it as a gaming machine - downsampling can have mixed results. Maybe I read too much about thermal throttling too, I think the next batch of AMD cards and Intel CPU's might fix those problems though.

  • I'm glad that TRIM support for 3rd party SSDs is now in OSX.
Just jump in to the terminal and type "sudo trimforce enable".

    Thanks for the tip!

  • I've got two 2011 macbook pros for sale. Both non-retina so upgradeable, VGC, high res antiglare screens. One is a Core i7 2.0 with 128Gb SSD and superdrive, the other has dual 128Gb SSD and 500Gb HD (and a higher spec processor from memory).

    PM me...

  • No. As I said. Photoshop doesn't like the split screen. It works, but it isn't 'integrated' with the new El C stuff yet.

  • External SSD has made this iMac soooo much better...

  • Please give more details? Usage? Is Read write through USB faster than internal spinning SATA? I get quite confused by these things.
