Removing semi-deep scratches from Ti

  • Hi all,

I've read the shiny shiny post and other polish-related posts already -- and they have been a huge help when its come to removing gouges from and polishing my steel and aluminium components.

However, I've recently come into a gorgeous Record Ti seat post (and matching Record Ti groupset I might add :D) that is quite scratched up from being inserted and moved numerous times. The previous owner is shorter than me, so I have an inch of seatpost showing that is in really rough shape. In the polishing threads I didn't really see anyone speaking of removing semi-deep scratches from their Ti componentry.

Has anyone had any luck with this? If yes, what did you do?

    Cheers!

  • You can you scotch brite pads to brush titanium.Use an action that works around the tube diameter rather than along its length. Start with coarse pads and progress to finer pads then metal polish if needs be. This is how some ti frames are brushed. If you have no luck with these you can try using a stainless steel brush attachment on a dremel to create a deeper action to start then go to pads after.

  • Cool I will give that a try. I suppose I will have to be extra careful not to take out too much material and thus change the effective diameter of the post.

I don't imagine I'll be able to get it back to the finish that comes on the post from the factory, but hopefully the damage will be a little more subtle than what it is currently.

  • Titanium is fairly hard it will take a lot to reduce the diameter. But as you say do it carefully and it should reduce the scratches visual impact.

  • Cool, I'll give that a shot over the weekend. Cheers!

  • start with the grey (scotch brite) pad, finish with the maroon coloured one which is finer. You can even use some 'astonish' paste which is great for very fine rubbing.

  • Do you guys think hitting it with a dremel and a buffing pad of some kind (or possibly even sandpaper or steel wool) would be a bad idea? Some of the scratches are pretty deep and I'd really like to restore this beauty to its former glory.

I did pick up a couple of the green Scotch Bright pads as well as one of the double-sided buffing ones as a back-up as well though.
