  • Yep, Griso 8V.
I had the 4V version first, which had more than enough grunt really, but that one ended up in the side of a van on Old Street. The insurance paid out just when they announced the special edition green one....

  • Very distinguished get up too. Chapeau.

  • Lewis boots and plus-fours is the look of the future.

  • This has a dented tank. But you can get bolt-on aluminum ones which look ace. What of this registration bother, do we think?

  • What hasn't been said is whether VAT was paid at the time of import (google DVLA NOVA)
You might need to pay £800 - £1000 just to be in a position to apply for registration?
Having just jumped through the hoops to get a registration (including 'proving' that a machine without documents or registration number had not been exported and then re-imported) I wouldn't do it again willingly.

  • Thanks for the info.

  • ^You guys are spoiled with all the cheap Vespas. Grrrr.

  • Not sure about the smallframe. Looks nice but I'm slightly wary of tuned ones. And the mudguard and seat are horrendous.

    The '79 P200 looks nice.

  • However, as @inchpincher will tell you, I should never be trusted to pick and buy my own bike again. My current one is slowly getting towards sorted now, after six months or so of fettling and a lot of parts. I bought a lemon...

  • Ha same here bro. Bought it for £900, selling it for parts a year later because it's going to cost me £500 to get it through the MOT. It's a rite of passage.

  • Sorry to hear that. Not sure what'll happen come MoT time for me. Only slight concern at the moment is that the throttle doesn't spring back - it's basically like cruise control. I think that's a failing point, right? Still, shouldn't be a hard fix.

I'd just like a slightly older one, frankly. I also have a hankering for a bigger bike - and choosing a lemon there is more serious than on a Vespa, which only has 12 moving parts and a seat.

  • If you're set on a P range try and get a T5 Classic - superb engines

  • I'm not, really. It's just that I know my PX now, but smallframes are a mystery. And although I want an older one, I'm concerned about finding one that's legit now, after all that talk of bad restorations and dodgy imports.

  • That 90 looks like a good shout. If all they have done is stick the kit on there (and changed the studs/exhaust/gearing then it'll be hoot.
Agree on the seat and mudguard though.

That LX15o has no keys, and as they have a transponder key setup it's big expense to get a new lockset, recode the immobiliser, etc, as well as recommissioning it. Not worth it.

Vespa throttles never used to have return springs - the lack of one allows you to indicate right without slowing down. They relied on the carb spring, which isn't that strong on a DellOrto SHB. You won't fail an MoT because of it if it was never there in the first place.

  • I've heard that about older machines but the PX has a spring both in the carb and the headset. Mine just seem tired after 15 years of use.

It got better with a new cable and outer, and again when I cleaned the carb and spring, but it still doesn't return properly. I may order a new set of springs when I next do a SIP order and see if that solves it (worth a go for the sake of a few quid). It would be better I think, in London traffic. I have electronic indicators on a PX after all...

You think that 90 looks OK then? The floorboard seems to need runners, and the legshield needs trim. Plus paint on the mudguard and a new seat.

  • It needs work, but it could be a sound base for the money

  • Says the man who spent £X,XXX restoring a Vespa...

  • ;)

  • All the t5 is a 5 transfer engine (5 ways to get the fuel in, my douglas is a two transfer soon to be modifed to a three transfer) Am sure there is a 7 transfer engine.

  • None of those gum tree vespas do it for me, much better finds on eBay. Scooter Emporium who used to be off Brick Lane have some nice imported Lambrettas (with docs) for the same moneyz if you factor in some of your own free spanner time which you'd most likely have to do with someone else's project. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAMBRETTA-ORIGINAL-LI-125-SER-3-ITALIAN-SCOOTER-UNTOUCHED-FROM-NEW-/171948842529?hash=item2808f31e21

Or go a bit different, a Maicoletta, a Zünndapp Bella, a Heinkel etc turn up for circa £2k

@Sparky have a real good think about what itch it is you're trying to scratch, your current ride ticks a few boxes (classic-ish, geared, standard spec). Also what condition, a project or a finished ride, where you're going to keep it, how much money you can afford to throw at it, how you're going to use it (commute or recreational) or is it an investment? And budget!

I would by a motorbike in your spot, £1000-1500 gives you loads of option to go classic but still reliable. I'll try to throw some links at you but I'm running out of the house.

  • Check that the hand grip is not rubbing on anything. I had this problem on a BMW, the bar end was rubbing on the throttle grip.

  • Vespa's (proper ones) don't have barends, also very different to motorbikes.

  • It seems to be that the spring in the carb has lost its springiness. Hopefully changing it doesn't require too much fiddling.

Just seen this, which is almost tempting as a winter runabout...
