Does windows even recognise fusion drives?
-
• #8578
Anyone here split a fusion drive before?
Yah. Piece of piss. Can't even remember how I did it now but I must have done because I made my own then got rid of it.
Why do you want to split it again though?
-
• #8579
No. Linux does though.
-
• #8580
Maybe I will give it a bash over the weekend.
Terminal pun ahoy!
-

mkdir hammerTime
chmod 500 hammerTime
cd hammerTime
touch thisetc.

• #8582
Nope. Just uses the hdd part.

Over my head. Wanted to split to boot camp on SSD part but research tells me fps won't actually be improved. Like the idea of not worrying about management so prob not splitting now. If need be will set up RAM disk for steam games when in Windows.

Type it in to terminal :)
A fusion drive is basically a cache between your SSD and your HDD. It's powered by a special driver that manages the movement of data between the two. So if CPU power is your top priority, you will gain a bit by splitting it, but only a bit.
Fusion drives work well with small files, but less well with big ones, so power users using big files are better off avoiding them as there will be annoying starts and stops as the system is moves big chunks of data to accommodate new files. Also fusion drives use HFS+ which increases the risk of corrupted files, and because there are two drives combined your risk of a drive failure increases by 100% so you should always back up if you do use them.

BTW, bash is the name of the Unix shell, a.k.a Terminal in OS X (as you didn't even get your own pun):

Just ordered a 256gb 850 pro to stick in a usb3 enclosure. Going to sneakily clone my work computer (new imac but with shitty 5400 rpm spinner) and boot from the external, which should hover around 300mb/s up and down.

This sounds like a possible option as well.

I'll swap you some back issues of Ride BMX mate. Any good?

So I installed El Capitan... So far so good. I like the split view thing.
-
• #8590
Are Photoshop and InDesign OK?
-
• #8591
The split screen thing would be so useful for me...
-
• #8592
I'll let you know today. Downloading on my new iMac and will be working from it all day. Such dare! Much risk! Wow!

Yah, all good. Haven't tried split view with adobe stuff but I was using it for documents/web browsing last night.
Overall, it feels a lot smother. Exposé is buttery even with 30 finder windows open.9/10. Would bang.

Also hit 70fps at max in 1440... this iMac is a beast.
(Usually sits a lot lower but feels very smooth). -
• #8595
That's all good but where?
-
• #8596
In the port city just south of Novo!
-
• #8597
Nice! SSD and enclosure arriving tomorrow. No more waiting for stuff to load!
-
• #8598
I thought you were coming back to the UK around now? Offer to let me call you sister is still on the table...
I just want to call you sister in person... ;-)
-
• #8599
He's been back for ages! Bro.
-
• #8600
Been back a couple of months now! Happy to be called sister anytime... (couldn't afford a new Mac in the end so went S/H but thanks!)
Just did some research while work dodging. SSD won't effect fps much but can will effect load times. Think I will keep the fusion whole and max the ram 32gb so I can run games off it as a RAM disk. Bosh. Can't wait to test it out.
