• I'm after a weatherproof backpack for commuting and general daily use, and tbh struggling to find something that completely fits the bill. I'm after something at least 30L big, can fit a 15inch macbook, completely waterproof and have good visibility... Any recommendations?

The Ortlieb Messenger bag looks great but doesn't have any separate or internal pockets which I think could be infuriating after having used a Chrome Citizen for this last year (which has been great, but I now need something bigger and want two straps). Would be great to be able to strap my lock on the outside of a bag too.

The Chrome Bravo looks good but it appears you have to extend the bag out the top if you want to fill it upwards of 20L. A T-Level rolltop would be great though how are these on visibility? And anyone used an Ortlieb Transporter?

  • Seen quite a few people with Mission Workshop backpacks and never heard anything negative.

  • Unfortunately the closest thing the messenger get to internal pockets is THIS and it is pretty small.

  • Bigxtop.

  • You could check out the LOMO drybags. They have quite a few different models. No compartments though as far as I know.

  • Chrome Yalta/Barrage?

  • I've been using Ortlieb bags them for years and really like them, they are very tough and certainly waterproof. You can get a few internal pockets as extras which pop in. The transporter looks like it would be very sweaty on your back due to the lack of padding/ventilation there. I really like the look of the Messenger XL, but its probably a bit overkill at 60 litres.

  • Cheers for the replies guys! Yeah @Murphys_Law I did look at LOMO, am keen on this

(of course comes with a way to carry my iceaxe too) but it's out of stock - any idea on where else might stock this one?

@cable Mission Workshop seem great but not v big on visibility! Just watched their rambler packing video on the site though and it's incredibly slick.

  • Cheers Borek - what internal pockets do you use/where do you get them from? (- is there anything more extensive than the one in salmonchild's link above?)

Thanks for the heads up on the transporter. Yeah I was eyeing up the Messenger XL but definitely a bit overkill (possibly on the budget too) though the thought of rocking up to the office each day with it is pretty funny!

  • That one caught my eye too. My lil' brother has the 30l black one and is quite happy with it. Holds a laptop and enough stuff to get you through the day.

The LOMO stuff is also quite cheap, which is nice.

Also, it holds 2 iceaxes, not only one. Because the only thing you need more than one iceaxe is 2 iceaxes, obv.
But I guess with a little bit of out-of-the-box-thinking these straps can be used for a multitude of stuff.

I don't think they retail anywhere else. Maybe write them and ask?

I myself have gotten around quite well for the last 1-2 years with an Ortlieb Velocity. It fits a 15" laptop nicely, and everything I need for work/uni/overnight.
It's only 20l though, so its capacity has its limits..

  • bagaboo are ace, had mine for 6 years, still looks great and works as it did when it was a day old.

All built to order, so can spec reflective all over.

  • I've dropped LOMO an email so we'll see what they say (and yes of course - I meant both my iceaxes).

Yeah Ortlieb Velocity look good but definitely not big enough for me! Now that I've started using spds I have some days where I'm carrying two pairs of shoes (work & gym kit) which is ridiculous I know.

I'm actually feeling like I might be being swayed to a Mission workshop Rambler. Have just looked at Chrome Ivan too which has seperate wet/dry compartments which is pretty sick! Both of these are pretty steep in price though...

@coldharbour bagaboo could be an idea... which one do you have? The Rancid looks like it might work well

  • workhorse pro large.

  • I've just replaced a Chrome Ivan with a trash bag. The Ivan was good, separate pockets you could put wet stuff in was nice. It survived several downpours keeping everything dry. Was a bit pricy but I figured it was worth paying a bit for a proper waterproof bag to protect a laptop. I just needed something bigger.

Ivan is for sale on here #spam
