  • Don't get me wrong I love steel track bikes and have had many but I don't know what it is! Il be riding it and it's very smooth, quiet etc, but after a while I'm like "meh"

I can only describe it as mature or sensible

  • Don't get me wrong, but unless you are really mashing it >25mph, the heavy gearing will make you meh.

  • I can't help but think it's not all that "exciting" to ride

Risers are the answer! Makes any sweet fixeh instantly twice as fun to ride.

  • It's on 52-15, same ratio I use on my other bike, I did put risers on and risers are indeed fun. Going to go for a ride

  • Wide risers are the answer! Makes any sweet fixeh instantly twice as fun to ride.

    Fixed it.

  • 52-15

52/15?! Well, there's your problem; that's not a fun ratio at all! When I started riding fixed, I rode 48/17 and now I even put a 19T cog on for extra funsies (though the topspeed is terrible).

    @Dakin:

    Wide risers are the answer!

I still have to try those. They seem fun indeed, but I'm kinda worried about getting through small passages/cars/etc with them. Is this an issue you think?

  • It's on 52-15

Can you ride 25mph rather easy for let's say 1 minute?

  • Around the outside.

  • That's bigger than my track gear.

  • You're all confused, I've ran this gear for ages on many bikes and it's not that! Yes I can average 25mph for longer than a minute, u naughty troll! Some people like having a higher gear

  • Things get more exiting with wide risers and lower ratios on any track frame. I've never thought of my Peloton or vivalo as exiting, more like i just feel comfortable riding it, geometry and clearance is just spot on

  • 48-17?

    Wow

  • Then they grow up and realise lower gears are much more suitable for anything besides racing. Kyle Murphy finished fifth in RHC Milan last year on 48x15, reckon you know better than him?

  • you can jam with your current ratio but you can't jump. that's why there is no excites.

  • Its deeper than that, for me ratio is a personal thing and I've tried loads and was on 52-16 for well over a year and it started to feel spinny. With this in mind, it all comes down to preference and what you're used to

  • In my defence I did gym and heavy weights training since school

Lost some gains now though #420
    Weight training thread>>>>>>>

  • I've ran this gear for ages on many bikes and it's not that!

OK - then I'm rather clueless of your perceived meh

  • would 54x13 make it more interesting for you?

  • Where's Skrtluv? He'd put an end to this with a definitive answer.

  • No, however suggestions involving component changing (non related to chainring and sprocket) position, tyres etc was what I was originally in search of would be more appreciated.

I just prefer my other slightly more unusual bikes running on tubulars with components that aren't limited by NJS, maybe little bits of carbon, etc, not going to derail the thread cos I love Japanese Keirin bikes

Anyone here got any of this?

  • 48/19 is an amazing ratio. So much fun and doesn't destroy my already-fucked knees.

  • I think I understand what you mean, the current nagasawa I have doesn't ride as fun as the makino I got from sumo, can't explain why but the makino feels miles more fun than the one I have at the moment

  • Anything with a wheelbase less than 95cm should be a hilarious ride (some NJS frames can go under others can not due to slacker head tube angle).
