I'm sitting on a very soft pillow now. Ardennes road surface, what a joke... 35mm tyres would still have resulted in a sore bum. Besides that, Mr. Spaghetti altered the route we did in 2011 & 2013 somewhat to include even more of the steepest climbs he could find in the area. All in all 8+ hours in the saddle for 190kms of suffering on 4500 alt m. Already looking forward to the 2017 edition ;-)

Raced a fixed gear criterium Saturday #sunshinecrit - course was very technical and didn't think I could manage a podium against the bigger motors who participated - so strategy was to blow everything a part on the first lap by building a bike that would be the only one being able to handle corners at high speed, Fatboy 45c on 6omm toroidal rims @83.9" - hope to create smaller groups everywhere and find my luck in one of them (bigger groups would eat my sorry ass, by me not being able to control the race in the bunch).
I went for the hole shot and got 20 meters, 30 meters, 20 meters, 10 meters, 0 meters after 1km and only 8 people was able to chase, so I tried to follow the group. It wasn't really possible since the 95% max HR on the first lap took it's toll (my warm-up was a little too short, missing out on touching 95%, which this tactic should demand).
Settled down and was getting 20 sec rest before clinging on to the chasing group - in which I suceeded and finished 7th (38.7km/h average @90% maxHR).Sprint for 6th which I lost

30 miles around outside Swindon on Sunday, at a pretty lazy speed. This weather is making it hard to do weekday rides.

took an almost traffic free route from hackney to Brighton following national cycle network route just so I could experience some easy off road rolling on the fat tyres. managed 80 miles somehow with fucking about in london either side

nuts.
Was it a dirt track or what?

Curb ramps, 90° turns, cobble stones. The winner raced on 25c - hindsight 45c was a catastrophic choice :]

I'm loving that bike, J. But that big ring looks big for a cross bike, is that to handle your awesome power?
-
• #9109
cheers @andyp, the bike is plenty fun but at moment is my only geared rig and spends most of the time on much narrower tyres and the 50-36 is about right for my road riding needs.
if i ever do some actual cross or touring it will get geared down. and touring is the plan as i have got the racks.
just need to pick up something else for the road. something that will do credit to my 'awesome power'.

Are you thinking old school? The guy you met the other day would possibly allow me to sell the red Treviso if it were you.

Plans for the day fell through so decided to have a late start and go for a ride.
These days I just tend to let the Garmin choose a loop for me and off I go. Told it to find me a 55 mile loop starting near Thames Ditton as it saves me from the one way hell hole of Kingston. Have had bronchitis for the past couple of weeks but it felt like I could breathe again today, though I had a few moments when I was bubbling snot out of my nose like a sick infant.
First forty miles felt fine, and then I hit an utter wall. Turning pedals felt like my legs were in treacle and I couldn't summon any energy.
Am a completely useless navigator so best to let the machine decide things for me. Can never remember what road follows what junction, and was lacking any motivation so was hoping for a nice gentle 25 miles home. But fuck no, I get sent up Raikes Lane which was interesting as someone coming down it in their car had managed to flip their vehicle onto its roof. People were helping out and had called 999 so there was no need for me to stop. My sense of direction being piss poor, and brain feeling pretty depleted I forgot that Whitedown comes after Raikes and then discovered that the little black box of torture on my handlebars wanted me to ride up it. The desire to get off and walk was pretty high but the stubborn cunt in me decided to just remain seated and struggle up, which was made a little more challenging with emergency services going the other way to help at the scene of the accident.
It's the first time in a while that riding has felt like a struggle, but the idiot in me is already hoping I have a clear day with clear weather to do it again next week.

Been off the bike last few weeks, but rode the Brighton to Brighton and done my first proper 100 miler today. Wishing I felt as good as I did a couple months ago, but still stoked on a decent ride. I think I had the oldest bike there. Riding off the front of a group packed with expensive carbon felt good.

On Friday I completed my first ever 100 mile ride, fixed and brakeless from home to Brighton. We freestyled the first 60 miles with only a mental note of the towns we needed to ride through in order to join the downs link from Bramley just below Guildford. Various blog posts about the downs link had promised anything from mostly paved paradise to deadly MTB only track. It sure as hell was not mostly paved but the 30 or so flat miles of gravel and muddy puddles were alot of fun, I'm sure it would of been less fun if the weather had turned. Great fun though and would do it again for sure, probably not fixed on crabon wheels and 25c tyres though. I'll add some pictures to this post in a bit.
Strava link below, you'll see that our sense of direction is not great for the first section, and my phone died before we actually got to brighton

Inspired by https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/245860/?offset=225#comment12498171 on Saturday I decided to follow Lea River from source to Thames. I'm not sure if I got lost or just missed the nice bits about this route. I sure will not be doing this again. The path was full of clueless riders taking up too much space and shouting, belling and whistling at everyone around them. This shared path thing diminishes the experience for both riders and walkers, and whoever came up with this idea should be made to wear crocks for the rest of their life. The only good thing about it is that it's down hill all the way to Limehouse.

It was the full moon on Sunday night so decided to do a solo unsupported 24-hour ride. Smashed my goal of 500km with a 514km total for the 24 hours. My route was London to Newcastle. It was pretty brutal but I like these experiences for personal growth / reflection. Maybe I'll do the next one on the fixie!

^ Nearly in Balsham; early August.
No club run today so a solo easy 40 miles, then home to take my 16 month old on the Sky Ride (York). Didn't really enjoy getting shouted at by marshalls and trying to avoid rear-ending people stopping suddenly but closed streets was pretty cool, to be fair.
