Mudguards

  • I got Strada Bianca 30s under mine, a bit tight but they worked fine. There's so little flex in the struts that once they're set up they don't more, unlike sks

  • My feet seem to stay drier for longer when the going gets tough.

Beauty of actually having a longer mudflap to stop you and your drivetrain from getting dirty.

  • Velo Orange have a very good instruction on fitting them on their website, this is where I would start.

  • Thanks Ed

  • I have 28c tyres in wide rims so more like 30, 35mm SKS longboards are just the right size

  • Great thanks.

  • Enve releasing a proprietary carbon mudguard for use with their cross fork... looks pretty decent for a bang-on-trend all-road machine. More here, apparently a rear is in the works.

  • £500 carbon crud racers?

  • What's the "best" bolt on mudguard set for a racing bike that's going to be used as an all-weather commuter. let's say 30-50 pounds?

  • Stupidly short for a lots of money.

  • I have 60mm Gille Berthouds that I want to mount on my rigid 29er with suspension corrected forks. Massive gap between crown and tyre. I thought about making something, but just came across the Fender Flute. Any experience with them? They don't look too solid being only half round. Before I saw them, I was thinking of getting some solid aluminium bar that would fit tightly into the steerer, be drilled through to bolt to the rack/guard fork hole and then drill/tap the bottom end to take a bolt from underneath to mount the mudguard. This would also work out cheaper.

Are there any other options (Fender Flute alternatives, or maybe a 'bridge' between fork legs)? Any reason the Flute would be a better option than Al bar?

  • Do you have a brake hole in the fork?
DIY daruma with a stainless I-bolt and some spacers (rubber bits from bar end plugs work) would be easily strong enough. That being said, most Problem Solvers stuff I've seen seems up to the job.

  • Can't seem to find a way to make crud road racer 2s fit over 25mm tyres without rubbing horribly. Sigh.

  • Can any pdw owners advise whether the guards could be fitted to a converted track bike with campag record hubs? I reckon clearances should be ok, just concerned about the axle diameter .... Thank you

  • Assuming by "bolt on" you mean you have eyelets front and rear, you can get a set of 700c SKS chromo-plastics from Ribble for £27 with mudflaps here or even cheaper without.

Evans will price match the one they have (no mudflaps) if you'd rather pick up in store.

I don't know if they are the best but they certainly work. I had them on my Equilibrium and now on my Ribble commuter.

Bit of a faff to get them on an aligned properly but once done it's been pretty much fit and forget for me.

  • If it doesn't work just use p-clips on the fork/seatstay...

  • They can be a compleat arse to fit first time, I found the instruction video on their site a bit helpful - more so with the adjustments, but it did take a few goes.

That said, I was running 23c tyres and the fit was already really tight.

  • What's generally considered the best way to add some extra flaps to mudguards? Materials and attachment advice needed. I'm thinking inner tube and rivets? If I can avoid taking the drill to them I'd be happier. How does mega strength glue hold up? I've got some of this knocking about:

  • I'd want something stiffer than inner tube: milk bottle if you're on a ghetto tip.

I think I'd also prefer a rivet or screw, to glue.

  • I'd want something stiffer than inner tube

A section of tyre could work well.

  • If you've got SKS just get the SKS one, one hole and a little screw

  • I've got a pair of these:
    http://www.amazon.com/FENDERS-AXIOM-ROADRUNNER-LX-29/dp/B00MX8403U/ref=sr_1_22?s=outdoor-recreation&ie=UTF8&qid=1442920113&sr=1-22&refinements=p_4%3AAxiom

They look super neat with their lack of flap and nice curved solid end, but the front just sploshes water onto my toes every time you go through a puddle (its was all puddle today so lots of sploshing).

Tyre sounds like a good shout, I just don't have any worn out old massive slicks and don't really want to go so ghetto I've got nobblies stuck to the end.

Think someone somewhere said they made some out of vinyl, but from the above posts, this may be too flappy for a good flap.

  • Good call.

I think Ed used one to extend the front of a rear mudguard.

  • I just don't have any worn out old massive slicks

    LBS?
