I guess the bigger sensor means you're getting less depth of field at f2.8 on the new GR than the older ones so maybe f1.9 wasn't needed for getting the same subject isolation. Obviously you're losing a stop of aperture but the bigger sensor also means noise levels are lower so higher isos are probably cleaner and more useable?
