I used to have a bike with the Nitto Moustache bars and then old-school drops on horizontally, which worked alright.
Because of the cable pull it may only work on straight bars when there's very little lever travel though.
If they're being that fussy they'll probably had to make do with crosstop levers though. Beggars can't be choosers!
