On a narrower rim, the tyre if compressed, is wider than the rim so even if pressure down the rim is not exposed to that nasty curb.
If your tyre is compressed enough for the rim the hit then the tyre would be wider than the rim (even if you were using 23mm tyres on a 24mm rim). And they'd be underinflated.
Is there less space for the tyre to compress to protect the rim, as it is stretched wider and so not as high? On a narrower rim, the tyre if compressed, is wider than the rim so even if pressure down the rim is not exposed to that nasty curb.
