Well it's a Carlton, but I don't think I'd bother with a proper respray, and run it as a beater. The paint job it has atm is a bit shite anyway...

I expect it's probably past the point of no return but I'm the guy who sold Jon the Carlton and I think that, at least for the sake of recovering some sort of reputation, I point out a few things.
I've been trading on here for a few years and have met plenty of guys through the forum with good feedback every time.
After selling Jon the bike, when asked if I'd replaced the bottom bracket myself I said no, my uncle had replaced the bottom bracket because of play in the cranks (caused by the stripped threads). He didn't ask me if I knew the threads were stripped, at no point did I say they were fine so I find it a bit frustrating that on this thread I've been painted as some sort of ignorant twat who kept denying the threads were stripped... there's plenty of evidence for my knowledge of that on the forum as you've already pointed out.
I genuinely thought a replacement BB designed for stripped threads would be the answer to the problem, based on feedback from forum users 3 years ago or so. I fully understand that stating that the frame had stripped threads should have been the top of the list of things when selling the bike, but I honestly didn't even think of it. For that I can only apologise (although it seems the witch hunt that's followed this post that might be forgotten...). I did go for a test ride before selling and the bike did ride quietly and smoothly, but it was only a few miles. The bike hadn't been ridden other than that for a few years so I wasn't to know it would be working its way loose, again I was only going on advice from that thread.
When I sold the bike I wasn't sure if it was a genuine Carlton or not. This was stated on the ad, unlike the ad for the bike when I originally bought it 3 years ago. For this reason I listed the bike for a lesser amount than I thought it would be worth, around the same as I originally bought it for. Having posted on the thread for identifying frames, it was suggested that it was almost certainly a Carlton but instead of relisting it, I kept the price the same, happy for someone to get a bargain. For this reason I thought that, with the price of the components probably being worth £250 in total anyway, a £50 refund was fair enough given the increased value of the frame. Obviously with the damaged threads it would have been reduced but still a £100+ pay out for a £250 bike is a bit crazy.
I did offer a full refund but am in Sheffield so would have to collect next time I'm back in London.
I'm happy for Jon to share screenshots of any of our conversations, I feel I've been quite unfairly represented.

So you were selling a bike in worse condition (stripped bb) than when you bought it but considered that you could have made a profit?

No, I was selling the bike in better condition for the same amount having paid for the new BB.
Give me a minute and I'll dig out an old post to show you...

Well there you go, my memory obviously wasn't very good... I paid £350 for it. I actually remembered paying £250. Do you see now why I think a £125 refund would be quite harsh? I tried to be as honest as possible in my ad but genuinely didn't even think about saying the threads were stripped. Not sure what else I can say.
edit
if it wasn't already clear - I didn't strip the threads! The bike came stripped, not stated in the advert above. The difference is that I sold the bike 3 years later, with no use, for £70 less, having attempted to fix the issue at my own expense but forgot to say that I'd done so -

The only way to fix this without coming across as a huge see you next Tuesday would be the offer of a full refund + shipping. Problem solved?
-
• #3408
Yup I'd be happy to do that

OK,
I think this has gone far enough then,
JT, as a gesture of goodwill i will return the bike in full working condition, albeit with a few modifications that i would consider less than ideal, but 100% better than the way it came, which was unridable. This way if you keep it it will ride, or if you re-sell the new owner will have something useable. I do feel bad that you have lost out because of the original sale and want to help if I can to return to you a useable bike.
The original threads on the installed threadless bb came loose and stripped its threads on the ride home. I took it out of the frame (That was when I contacted you originally) and noticed the state of the bb shell. The reason that it damaged (the threads on the cartridge type bb) was that the shim that was in place between the cup of the bottom bracket and the bottom bracket shell was a larger diameter than the sealed unit, which allowed it to move around in the shell under pedal power and loosen, thereby damaging the treads and changing the chainline.
Since then, i made a shim to take up slack inside the shell and tried to re-install it, but the damage had been done.
So, I have now taken a campagnolo italian threaded bb and epoxied it inside the shell (after removing the layers of paint and rust that were in there), with new ball bearings and a decent axle. this has improved things significantly, the crankset is now straight and works a lot better. This is a temporary solution and eventually they can be removed with heat and replaced with a decent threadless bb like one of these> http://hilarystone.com/bottombracketother.html
I also tightened up the crank bolts and replaced the one that had seised up (needed drilling out) and properly inserted the expander for the brake lever that had almost worked itself out.
Lastly, I regreased all the necessary contact points (they were all dry, some parts took some effort to loosen), re-assembled the bike and cleaned and oiled the chain.I hope this goes some way to make you feel better about taking back the bike.
Jon.

Dibs if back up for sale.

• #3411
Nice to see this sorted out. Not bad at 280 if the bike is back on sale again. The wheel parts without labour should cost at least half of that.
-
• #3412
would there be interest in the frame if I split this? I have the original forks too. Would save a lot of hassle...

@matteroftaste
Has the chap not agreed to a full refund plus shipping costs? One box, partial strip, wait in for courier. I've not looked at the condition of the bike and/or components but surely this would be the easiest solution? If not you'll be shipping parts, meeting people all over the shop, multiple PMS etc. -
• #3414
True true, but I like the wheels, basically only interested in getting shot of the frame, I'd be more than happy to migrate components over to a new one.
Ill be sending the seller an email tonight once I'm home, as I don't think he's checked back here since his last post. -

I was really hesitant to post here at first but now I am just frustrated. A couple of weeks back I posted on the Wanted section that I was looking for a Shimano groupset. @d-goods contacted me to say he had a groupset for sale and we communicated for a week about it until I sent him the £90 through Paypal. That was 11 days ago, he also replied that he would post it as soon as possible from Cambridge.
In this time I have not received anything from Daniel. Which would be fine if he let me know there was a delay in posting, however he is now completely ignoring me. I have sent him 3 messages, an e-mail, text and phone call and all have been ignored. But he has still been posting on the forum daily so he's obviously logged in, seen my messages and chosen to ignore them. This now confirms to me that he has no intention of sending anything and has just taken my £90.00.
I have just opened a dispute with Paypal today, how long do these things usually take to get sorted? I also thought I should let people know on here what's happened. It's completely baffling to me as he seems to be a really active poster so why would he do this? If you haven't had time to post it yet - why not just send a message to say either way...

Once you escalate the claim it takes 10 days for Paypal to step in and decide, assuming the seller hasn't posted the item or offered a refund before then.

Finally received a message from seller last night explaining what the delay was (still doesn't explain why no communication was made prior to this). He's mentioned that it was sorted on Saturday so I will give it a few days and see whether anything arrives. Will update here as soon as it's sorted...
-
• #3419
What do you mean 'you'll give it a few days to see if anything arrives'? Like I'm some sort of flake? I've done many trades and freecycles with LFGSS brothers as I'm sure many will testify.
I see you failed to explain to the massive that after we had a specific conversation about how much i wanted for the GS, you sent me a paypal payment, not by gift, and let me pay the paypal protection charges, meaning I didn't receive the payment we agreed.
I couldn't find the last few bits of the GS after I deconstructed it as explained, I was travelling with work like a MF last week and didn't have time to get the GS sorted in full to get it out to you rapidly.
You not sending me the amount we agreed didn't exactly incentivise me to do otherwise, did it.
Makes us pretty even in my book.
Seriously hope you enjoy the GS regardless.

When someone asks for PayPal gift I'm gone. Seller here has targeted buyer via wanted ad then can't get it together. Then isn't incentivised because buyer won't do PayPal gift? Sounds like a bad trader all the way. Correct thread.

Hah! Not taking any of this bait. Like I said, seriously enjoy the GS.

the "d" is for danger!
The brass and thread fix has been around forever, but it would need to be a decent frame to bother as it would also need a paint job afterwards.....
