Strasbourg and Alsace

  • Anyone have any good recommendations for Strasbourg and Alsace. Doing a week's cycling around Alsace which will involve a couple of days in Strasbourg which i'm none too familiar with

  • I've ridden up from Basel to Strasbourg, stopping in Colmar for a night. Theres an official cycle route along the Rhine, but I found it more interesting to to break off that, especially at the Basel end which was quite industrial.

Colmar was nice, at the foothills of the Alsace vineyards. I went through Ammerschwihr (really picturesque except for all the tourists), kientzheim and Riquewihr (both nice) on the way up to Strasbourg.

German side looked good too, but didn't stop as it was too early for a stein of beer.

  • cool
i know the place quite well, my girlfriend grew up near strasbourg.
The Vosges are great for road cycling and mountain biking as you can take on the elevation in gentle or hard way. and scattered in the mountains are some open mountain huts/bivvys to stay for the night or close to which you can camp.

the route you have is pretty good, but i wouldn't avoid the Donon which is a nice with ruins of a small pagan ( i think ) temple on top.

Strasbourg is pretty nice, very flat, but you can cycle across the border to germany and do a nice loop , there are infinite gravel cycle paths along the Rhine. the area has become pretty cycle friendly with the german influence.

  • Thanks for the pointers

  • unmissable : this jam factory on top of a pass has a small cabinet outside the building with a variety of free for all sirups to top up your bidon

  • Got back last night after an amazing time, will write up some more extensive thoughts but area is a haven for cyclists and region is underrated given how few cyclists i saw, at least up in the more mountainous areas. Going in early autumn is probably a good plan if you're not such a fan of blazing heat.
