  • i want to tap threads into the axles of my novatec track hubs for a neat solution of attaching mudguards to a frame that doesnt have eyelets. it turns out the axles are on the perfect position in relation to the length of the stays of the mudguards.

    a) is this a bad idea
    b) if no, what thread should i be tapping?
    c) could i do this when the hub is still in the wheel?
    d) what would a die cost?

i know this means having to remove the mudguards to get the wheel out, but actually that would be the case anyway with the rear wheel and removing a couple of bolts also isnt that much extra trouble.

    thanks in advance

  • Grab a tap and have at it on the bike, it's only holding mudguards in place so will be fine.

  • d) what would a die cost?

Don't worry about the cost of dies, it's a tap you want. A set of M6 taps and a tap holder should cost under a tenner.
