  • It is the bigger box one, not one of the new nano ones if that's the other option.

It feels a bit cheap really, compared to little Boss or Ibanez pedals.

  • Ha, never quite as simple as that is it, I think musicians and cyclists are just stuff magnets.

I did see that, looks like a great guitar, but a bit too close for a bass for me - I want something with that surf twang.

  • They look awesome. Love the pickup covers.

  • Lipstick pickups are the bomb, can't really comment on the new ones but the old ones sizzle when they're cranked...

  • Appreciate that this isn't 'guitar builders anonymous' but I imagine there's a couple of people on here who appreciate a bit of flame maple.... I spent a couple of hours in my shed earlier today on the strat I'm building.

This bit of lumber was quite expensive and to be honest, I was a bit disappointed with the grain till now. Just started lacquering and I'm no longer disappointed :] There's a lot more coats of nitro and buffing to come, but it's looking good.

I've built a few but it's the first time I've finished my own guitar, and I've massively over ambered it against what I was planning. I'm not going to sand back and refinish because

    1. I can't bear sanding it any more and 2. I looks pretty cool against it's (olympic white) body

  • Beautiful... The neck on my old Tokai Str*t had got a lovely flame on it... It shimmers in the light, it's gorgeous...

  • Love me some flame maple.
When I was 18, I HAD to build my own bass guitar. It took me nearly a year and a shit ton of money, but in the end I got a nice fretless bass out of it. I still own that bass, and on my bands latest record it makes it's first appearance. :)

  • Wow, did you make that whole damn neck out of a bit of wood?

  • ^this.
I build a guitar years ago and the neck was the bit I bought in. And pickups. And capacitors. Weak I know.

  • Thanks all, yep the neck started out as a plank of unfinished maple :] I'm a bit blown away by how nice it looks, kept going up over the weekend to look at it :)

It's the third guitar I've made (made a OM Martin and a Firebird previously) so the novelty of producing one has worn off and rather than the main priority being 'get it made', for the next one (likely a Jazzmaster) I'm definitely going to concentrate on stopping messing things up :)

  • Wow. Great work. OM must have been a challenge! :-)

  • Yeah - that was about three years work. I think you could probably do it in two. London Met college run an evening class where they teach and guide you through the build, you definitely learn enough to make electrics in much less well equipped shops (or, sheds :]). Godefroy (http://www.mjsguitars.net/) was my tutor, though he's gone back to France now.

Unfortunately, I believe that the college is financially slightly precarious and so they've massively increased the cost of the course in the past year or so. It's definitely worth a look though if you've got an interest (and they would probably let you build an electric if you asked, which would be a lot quicker).

  • Actually I've just posted this up on gumtree but if anyone's interested I'm flogging an Orange OR15 amp and a 1x12 Blackstar cab. Decent little setup for sludge, stoner, doom, classic rock, old school metal, all that stuff. It's on Gumtree for £350 the lot but I'll do deals for anyone 'on here'. Safey

  • And on a similar note is there anyone 'on here' who fancies putting together some kind of surf noir instrumental band? I'm sick of playing proper songs out and I want to make some kind of real primitivist racket. I reckon even a two piece (guitar + drums) would be pretty killer and I can play a decent guitar.

  • I can drum and would like to make such a noise. Will PM.

  • I like the sound of this.

  • I love it when a plan comes together. To the PMs!

  • Oh boy... If only I was still in London, would be ALL OVER THIS!!!

  • We could always go cyber. Set up a MacBook in the corner of the rehearsal room and beam your performance over FaceTime. Think about it... I haven't.

  • What's the cheapest good ES-335 copy? I had no idea how much the Ibanez and Tokai ones were!

  • Epiphone Dot is a good trade off?

  • I used to have an Epiphone LP and didn't really like it. I always lumped them in with Fender Squires but that's probably not fair.

Also I think I meant Yamaha not Ibanez.

  • Would also be interested in affordable 335 alternatives. I was looking a few years back and ended up settling on an Epi Casino with the slightly snobbish rationale that an Casino is *supposed to be a Epi. Bit of a different beast as an Casino is fully hollow with no centre block tho.
