Not a good idea, if you want to keep the clamp working. You will break the threading and end up with a useless clamp.
Get the correct size.

Not sure how to get a bolt with the correct pitch, as in I don't know how to measure.

We have a personal assistant service that answers phones and book in jobs for us, I had a job booked in to service a specialized clobe and specialized Rickhopper, I giggle every time I think about it. Put Rickhopper on it.

For M8 there are only two "normal" pitches that it can be either 1mm pitch or 1.25mm pitch.
Obviously 1mm being the finer of the two. Or very occasionally 0.75mm pitch. With a rule measure 10 or 20 threads and doing the sums. -

Best fish and chips in London? Got a friend visitng from Japan, she used to live here so have requested me to take her and her hubby for some fish and chips.
I usually get mine from a local Chippy which is pretty amazing or go to Super (or is it Master?) Fish near Waterloo, but neither places are good for sitting for long time...

Olley's in Herne Hill is supposed to be super, though I've never been. And it's the only place my friend who works in marine sustainability will eat.

i want to tap threads into the axles of my novatec track hubs for a neat solution of attaching mudguards to a frame that doesnt have eyelets. it turns out the axles are on the perfect position in relation to the length of the stays of the mudguards.
a) is this a bad idea
b) if no, what thread should i be tapping?
c) could i do this when the hub is still in the wheel?
d) what would a die cost?i know this means having to remove the mudguards to get the wheel out, but actually that would be the case anyway with the rear wheel and removing a couple of bolts also isnt that much extra trouble.
thanks in advance

A) I think you'd probably be fine as long as you don't drill too deep into the axle.
B) m5
C) from the photo I saw online it looks like you can just remove the axle from the wheel.
D) don't bother doing it yourself, you'd want to set it up on a lathe to get the hole central and thread it properly. If you're happy to wait for a couple of weeks I'd do it for you. I just don't have the equipment at the moment.

Grab a tap and have at it on the bike, it's only holding mudguards in place so will be fine.
-
• #70945
B) m5
Nope. Novatec track hubs already have a ~5mm bore all the way through, which is fine as a pilot for an M6 tap. Using M6 mudguard screws will require opening up the eyes of the stays a bit.

'Stumphumper' has its own merits too.
Especially if you're willing to indulge the more disturbed areas of your imagination... -
• #70947
d) what would a die cost?
Don't worry about the cost of dies, it's a tap you want. A set of M6 taps and a tap holder should cost under a tenner.

Obviously 1mm being the finer of the two. Or very occasionally 0.75mm pitch."very occasionally" in this case meaning "nearly always" when applied to the bikes ridden by forumengers; chainring bolt threads are M8×0.75

Not sure how to get a bolt with the correct pitch, as in I don't know how to measure.
A metal thread gauge costs a few pounds, plastic ones are so cheap they are given away by fastener shops the way Wiggle gives out Haribo
How about Hackhopper?
I call mine Rackhopper.
