I tightened it right up and after 15miles it started creaking and reporting through the cranks
Tightened what up?
I'm confoosed.
Does it already have a threadless BB or is the current BB a threaded one that's working loose because there aren't enough threads left in the frame?
If it already has a threadless one, it perhaps ought to have been down to you to spot that...
Either way I'm with @HousecatHST (whose name I always read as holocaust for some reason) threadless BBs can work just fine. If you love the frame and returning it is a pain get one fitted and see how you get on.

Yeah it already had one fitted, which was loose by the time I got home, but also loose inside the shell itself, so that there was play in the crank arms. Tightening it up also involved alignment, which shouldn't be an issue really. To clarify, the bb is tight against the sides of the bb shell, but there is room inside for it to move around.
Tbh if I can get the bike running in a reliable way then that'll suit me just fine, when it's not rattling and creaking I'm loving every moment or riding it.
I'm not getting a similar experience. I tightened it right up and after 15miles it started creaking and reporting through the cranks. I think it's because there's play in the shell where the threads just don't exist anymore.
As an aside, anyone know where and how much I can get a bb rethreaded? That could be an option.
