Don't. If you must square taper, the Shimano UN55 is better, so is the Token one which PX were clearing out at £10 last time I looked. My first choice for a shopping bike would be the Shimano FC-S500 crank, which comes with a Tiagra BB anyway.

you'll be fine on those 32c marathons with normal width rim. Experiment with pressure when you'll get it built, there's sweet spot somewhere.

Opinion varies. @Thuekr thinks they will be OK, I would be looking for wider rims to go with 32C tyres, but there isn't much available ready built. What he calls a "sweet spot" I'd describe as the least bad compromise between poor handling and a harsh ride.

Thinking Stronglight crank and BB. Was hoping for something fully black but the need to keep the cost down outweighs any cosmetic preferences unfortunately...

I assume there are some Stronglight Track 2000 users here? Planet X suggests 107mm Stronglight BB but I'm a little worried about the clearances. Would the 110mm BB be a better bet?

I had a stronglight 2000 on mine, with a 107mm BB with no problems re clearance, and 165 cranks. I only changed to a shimano external BB and cranks to go to a smaller chainring size (it's very hilly here)

I'm running 32mm tyres on fairly narrow (from Varno) rims also no problems, and I ride on some pretty rough trails. If I do keep the pomp, I will be looking for a wheelset with wider rims though.

For the wheels, from what I can see the Halo are around £120 all in, so I guess that is your upper wheel budget? In which case you could build a set yourself for a similar price (Mavic A319 ~£50 or KinLin XC-279 ~£70, novatec hubs ~£50, Spokes ~£20 = ~£120-150). At that price the KinLin in 28h would be my choice, assuming you're under 100kg. Plus you save yourself paying for 8 spokes ;)

If you're on a budget my 2p would be to try and source the below parts for free or as little as possible (£2-5) 2nd hand from the forum or ebay. Then "upgrade" them over time (if you need to). They are parts that new will always be at least in the £5-20 bracket, so you can easily save yourself £50.

Personally I'd go with wider rims and stretch your budget a little to get them, trimming on other areas. Spending a little more now will be cheaper than buying another set later on. Even if you went with H Plus Son archetype (~£50 p/rim) the wheel cost would only jump ~£50 and would give you a lighter wide wheelset.

The Alfine (FC-S500) crank comes in black and bang for your buck is probably the best deal you'll find.

The parts you mention I'm getting free from my brother, all of which came off his PX Pro Carbon.

That's worth thinking about. Haven't even got the frame yet and not in any desperate rush so will consider building wheels - only thing is I've never built wheels and only ever got the shop to do it (another cost).

It is (Alfine cranks are basically Tiagra with different things bolted to them) but why would you want to?

Looks kinda ugly but granted I've not seen a photo of one installed. It's only gonna be a commuter/pub bike anyway so not a material consideration. I think the main problem with the Alfine is going to be finding one...
