• It's actually the top race that is milled out for lightness which is the real differentiation. Early Chorus and Athena don't have this 'lip' in your photos and are virtually indistinguishable from Record. Also early C Record had a standard top nut like Super Record. I've got one on a Gitane which was near impossible to get off!

  • Hmm, I have to disagree sorry. What I'm finding in catalogues is telling a different story.

    Chorus also had a milled top race for at least some years... See this image from the 1987 catalogue (First year of this groupset). The edge/lip is hard to spot in this image but I'm seeing it on Chorus equipped bicycles from the era.

    Athena always had the edge on the side, along with an extra ridge (picture from 1988 catalogue)

    The 1985 C-Record catalogue (first year of this groupset) shows it had a specific locknut from its introduction.

    Anyway, these are just the catalogues. Very well possible Campagnolo did some quirky stuff outside of these.
