Many of the upper class were worried about socialism and communism and saw fascism as a way to avoid it. This coupled with institutional anti semitism led to some nasty people supporting filth. It was bad here but worse in France. But institutions like the police and army were there to protect fascists from reds and Jews.

it's entirely laughable how the queen's record reign, which has been brought about entirely by chance, is being called an 'achievement'. 'human being avoids dying as young as her father did' is something most of us have managed.

I always wonder about the money coming into our economy as a direct result of royalty-tourism. If you've ever looked at something like the changing of the guard, you'll see how popular all that pomp and ceremony is with people. Would as many people come to see it all if there wasn't a monarch? We're still a country steeped in history, with old things and beautiful things coming out of our ears. But it does rain a lot, and the traffic is terrible.
Maybe we should make the royals do an X Factor thing, and choose one each year to be a figurehead. The rest can get a job, or go on the dole.
