Ok so ended up doing about twenty five odd miles on 52/16 as I was enjoying myself. Verdict: doable but my knees feel funny now.
A nice person contacted me and offered me a 43t chainring which I recon I'll go for, nip it in the bud, right?!
On the plus side the wheel is fixed/fixed so if I want to I can gear up again later on.
