I'm still looking for a ratio that'll challenge and build strength. But cheers still.

• #2703
Have done, thanks!

Who knows, 52/16 might even be manageable, I'll find out when I ride the fifteen miles home from Victoria after I pick it up!

Baby Varno rides 66" around town. Are you looking to be stronger than her?
-
• #2706
Yes.
Well actually not a clue, this'll be my first foray into fixed, so its all untraveled road until I actually try to figure out what's doable.

Getting the 19T on the back will give you many more skid patches for tyre rubbertomization.

I went with the 48/19 recommended above and it's not caused me one single moment of 'I wish I hadn't done that'. Quite the contrary.

42/17
48/19
52/21
~65 GI. All good. Do it, be happy. -

This has probably been posted here many times before, but it's useful, so here it is again: Gear ratio calculator

And there are set tables to read off against.

Yeah the site I linked is useful mainly for comparing cadence & speed at different ratios.

Ok so ended up doing about twenty five odd miles on 52/16 as I was enjoying myself. Verdict: doable but my knees feel funny now.
A nice person contacted me and offered me a 43t chainring which I recon I'll go for, nip it in the bud, right?!
On the plus side the wheel is fixed/fixed so if I want to I can gear up again later on. -
• #2714
Can always take a link out the chain to fit if need.

Hill-climb season?
Foot-speed is the new sweetspot?
Or just keeping followers of the "approved" thread guessing...

Foot-speed is the new sweetspot?
Something like that. I've been running about 95rpm/160mm on the rollers for TT pace, but 85rpm/177.5mm on the TT bike, so I should be closer to road loading on the rollers now. The 64T came off the tandem, I'll get a 68T for that in time for next season to give a bit of head room as we were already pushing @umop3pisdn 's cadence on 64/16 on a good day. May need an 18T sprocket if Stewski has a go, he's more of a spinner.

Recently got back on the bike after a couple years out. Currently running 48/17 and on the few rides I've been on (few nasty hills) I've really struggled. Will changing to an 18 make a noticeable difference, don't want anything too spinny...
-
• #2719
18 or 19? Can't handle the hills anymore! Not too bothered about number of skid patches..
-
• #2720
18 should be fine, although 19 is the perfect ratios.
-
• #2721
Cheers, gone for the 18. See how I get on..
-
• #2722
56/14 is being trialled... it looks nice at least.
-
• #2723
Do you only ride down hills?!

Highly ineffective tho.
Hope you got a front brake in the very least.
Put up a wanted ad (if you haven't already) on the forum and they normally go for a fiver ish, for halo ones. Or sometimes you can get em for free if someone's got spares
