  • Ordered some samples so we'll see. I had a Husqvarna before and it was tough as nails, went through anything.

What machine do you have? I know nothing about them. Are modern ones any good?

  • That's the one, goes through anything

  • Completed this earlier with the 20oz canvas.. Cotton lining, Front zipper pocket and espresso tanned leather straps.

Trying something a little more cycling friendly next

  • tidy!

  • Made some toe straps!

A bit of testing and refinement and I should have some up for sale

  • Bit of a bump, does anyone know how to realign hook race with needle? It doesn't look like timing, the hook has stopped rotating behind the thread as the needle drops, so it is impossible for it to do any hooking.

Brother PS-31, I'm googled out with no joy.

The brother service center is only 10 miles away apparently but as these go on ebay for appx £45 it'll probably only be worth fixing if it can be diy'd.

  • Does anyone know what sort of sewing I should be looking at for making my full finger gloves into fingerless? Been wearing them all winter and they are just awesome but index and thumb have holes now so figured I should give them a chop and then do something with the ends so they don't come apart. Ideas?

  • Cut them down with about 10mm spare length, then give them a double fold hem inwards. Then just a quick top stitch over each one.

Thanks, going to study my hand position while I'm riding for a bit as I don't want a ridge/seam on the exact spot the brake lever will be or anything lol

  • Hi Clockwise,

I've got a ahem sort of degree in sewing - if you would like any help... drop me a PM.

    :)

  • Anyone made any bike packing gear? I'm interesting in making a handlebar harness for dry bags.

Seems you might need some serious hardware in order to keep it upright and out of the way of your hands.

  • That's pretty awesome, cheers drøn!
Might have a go at the frame bag as well.

  • Do it. I just made a frame bag with my 4yo son for his bike. It was bloody difficult, but mainly due to involment from said 4yo I think.

    Lessons learned:
    Simpler is better
    Think and plan ahead
Don't stitch through too many layers
My son can not yet be allowed to control sewing machine speed.

  • Would anyone here be able to extend the straps on a pair of big shorts? (Happy to pay of course) Cheers

  • Since nobody answered my thread, can anyone repair a hole in bib shorts (not much material missing), used to be flatlock stitched if that changes anything?

  • DREDGE!

Any tips on what material to use when making a tool roll? I'm hoping for it to be waterproof-ish. Basically a little bundle to hold a multi-tool, tyre levers, tube and patches with a little strap to attach it to saddle rails.

Kins like this but I don't have that weird plastic-lined fabric he has, and I'd make mine with correctly sized pockets for each tool.

  • You could always use cotton duck a la Carradice. Semi waterproof and can be treated to improve it.

  • I use cordrua - it comes in various weights and colours, and its easier to sew than waxed cottons. You can also use it as a lining/ waterproof layer with a cotton outer.

  • +1 on the cotton duck and http://www.otterwax.com/ would be nice
and cordura liner is a good idea.

  • Hi everyone, I am very qualified in sewing and I use a industrial sewing machine regularly.
I work in leather and i make custom leather saddles, i can repair any saddles, and i can make custom bags that are made from synthetic or waxed cotton fabric , but i prefer to work in leather.
if any questions or sewing jobs requires please private PM me.

  • Thanks - do you know where I could get hold of either in London?

Also, I only have a small sewing machine. It struggles with fat seams sometimes. Do you think that'd be a problem? I'm not very experienced at all.

  • I'd look at something like https://www.profabrics.co.uk/

Cotton duck is pretty thick so you might want to cadge access to a heavy duty machine.

  • Can anyone suggest a sewing machine? My partner is contemplating doing a sewing course and I was thinking a machine may be a nice xmas present.
