Thank BQ. Well up for borrowing the Dano at some point. That's exactly the vibe i'm after. I have a squier with flatwounds also which does an ok job. I'm prefer my old 50s P-bass back but there you go. *sob
In terms of amp sims I have some really nice plugins so i'm not overly fussed about standalone boxes. This is my favourite by miles:

I had a second gen' pod (the guitar one) fo ra bit in 2007 which was fine for messing about with but never really got beyond that thin plastic modelling amp sound. Software has come a long way since then.

I've got a Pod XT Live which I've gigged with and done all my recording with. To me it sounds OK, but what do I know? Even my amp is a modelling one.

Heh. I'm sure they've come a long way in the last 8 years too. I never thought I'd use a plugin to record a guitar but I do it all the time these days. Often with the intention of replacing it later. I very rarely do.

Very useful for layering, those amp sims. I used to do three takes of the amp mic'd up but also split off the dry signal sent straight to the board. That usually gives you enough 'matter' to edit around and create as full a sound as you need without any hard work. If you're not making a record for a record company to sell to the public then it's hardly a problem in the digital domain when done tastefully.

Everything about that video was awesome...

And now how NOT to do it...

So imagine I was a cheapskate and didn't wanna shell out for the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power Plus 2, what are the other, cheaper isolated power supply options? #cheapskate
-
• #3386
Yes!
-
• #3387
MXR Iso Brick, any good?
-
• #3388
No idea I'm afraid dude. I've only ever had one cheap (and massive brick sized) power supply. I just use my pedal tuner to daisy-chain the couple or three things I tend to use. Rick'll know. Riiiiick!
Richard Thompson being amusingly grumpy here. Haven't listened to lemmy yet.

T-Rex fuel tank (or jr depending on how many pedals you iz running)?
I got Thomann's own brand PS which actually seems better than the fuel tank Jr with the same 5 outputs. The only thing which infuriates me is there's no on/off switch but that's purely for home reasons. -

^+1 The Thomann/Harley Benton stuff is very good value… T-Rex clones… not sure about Oz shipping, though.
There are loads of Chinese copies of the bigger brands but not all have isolated outs as they cheekily claim... http://stinkfoot.se/archives/808

Good info, think I'm gonna cheap out and do this... Just found a house we like... ;)
edit: Large one isn't isolated and the smaller isolated version only has five 9v outlets... Boo!

Two pedal issues...
I bought a TC delay pedal (thanks for the recommendation) and it's ace, but the feedback/echoes carries on after you turn the pedal off, which I didn't think normally happened. Is this something you can turn off? Previous owner velcroed the entire back of the pedal and I think there are some switches underneath, I just haven't explored yet.
Second thing is my EH Holy Grail. Doesn't work at all in any setting, just cuts the signal out completely when it's turned on. The light is coming on and it used to work. Any ideas?
-
• #3393
Re. the TC - yes, sounds like it's set to "trails", one internal dipswitch turns that off (the other switch gives wet-only).
-
• #3394
Internal as in inside the box?
Oo-er.
A bit of Googling suggests that the Holy Grail problem is a common one and there's talk of replacing something called an op amp. Beyond my capabilities. I might find someone in London to take it to unless anyone fancies having a go at it with a soldering iron?

Haven't found anything yet that Frank can't fix... http://jpfamps.com/

I may pick up the Decibel Eleven Hot Stone Deluxe instead, few quid cheaper and has a couple of extra power outputs...

Will take offers on that EKO Ranger 6 acoustic from a few pages back if anyone's interested.... need the space really. Cheers
-
• #3398
@Olly398 - those EKO guitars are great, really punch above their weight in terms of sound. I made a whole acoustic album on it and it's one of the best sounding things I've ever recorded. If you don't sell it in a few days let me know and I'll buy it on general principle.
Has anyone picked up one of those Gretsch Baritone guitars? The black sparkly ones? I want to do a sort of gnarly surf two-piece thing with a pal and I reckon it'd be a top choice but don't live anywhere near a shop to try one out.

Cheers! Trying to slim down mt life, including guitars and bikes :-/
Baritone guitar you say - did you see this for sale thread recently?

Is it an older big box Grail? My old EHX Worm used to do the same thing.
What are you after in terms of sound? I've got a short scale Danelectro bass I bought on here which is great for that 60's pick-bass sound if you want to borrow it. Quite toppy, not so much sustain, you know the sort of thing. I also have a fretless Squier Jazz with flatwounds on it which can deliver a reasonable approximation of the upright bass sound.
It might be worth getting a Line6 Bass Pod (or a Pod with the bass amp model pack) if you're recording or plugging into the PA, to try a few different amp sims.
