• Superbe!!!

  • Andy!
A hearty welcome to the forum. Such a great frame. Box lining, lovely lugs, original paint and transfers. So much nicer than either of my Hobbs'.
Really looking forward to seeing what you do with this. Would be great to see you post when you get some bits. My cable housing arrived today. It's really nice!

  • This seems to be the meeting point for Hobbs from around the world.
Andy, be well warned, we are only too happy to advise you on how to spend your money.
Those cables do look absolutely right.

  • Nice.
I picked up my 49 from paint last weekend, if OK I will post up some pictures.

  • "if OK"? The whole purpose of coming on LFGSS is to have a look and droll over bikes pictures?!

  • Thanks all for the warm welcome!

@7VEN that cable housing looks cracking!

I will definitely update and pop pictures up when parts are found and arrive. Going to start the hunt this weekend.

I forgot to say that the frame also came with a 1946 dated Williams C1000 chainset. It's got some good going 'patina', but it all adds to the charm (I will pop some pics up). It's bang on period and from what I can ascertain Hobbs often fitted these on their frames?

@Big_Block looking forward to the advice and input. I have not done such an early build, so it will be much needed and appreciated.

@Stevevw look forward to seeing your 1949!

  • Right, toe clips.
Found these on the bay for a reasonable price. I thought they were Constrictor at first as my beer addled brain read "Like Constrictor" as "Constrictor".
    Anyway, they're made by CEG.
Google throws up nothing. They're super light though.
Anyone know anything about them and yeah or nah?

  • Oh and was I just day dreaming that I managed to find a LYTALOY headset for this build. In extreme good fortune, I googled LYTALOY headset for sale and found that Hilary Stone had updated his stock list and had not one but 4!
Not being one to look a gift horse in the mouth, I acquired all 4. Will need 3 more Hobbs builds to start now :)

  • Oh, and the postman dropped these off today too.
    All the way from France.

  • Nice catch!

  • Here is my 49, sorry for the rubbish picture quality. I am after a seatpin clamp if any of you have one @falconvitesse

  • Looking great. Who did the paint and are you happy with it? What are your build plans?

  • Mario did the paint, he has done a good job for me again. Gloss black with flamboyant red bands. This is the sixth frame set he has done for me this year, a George Brooks, 2x Viscounts, Benotto and an Elswick Mixte. No complaints at all. All transfers from Lloyd's.

    As for build
Lytaloy headset (if you have left any for the rest of us in the world ;0)) Early GB brakes, Williams chainset, Sturmey FW rear and probably airlite front 27" rims, Reynolds bar, stem and pin, Brooks B17 and Bluemels guards.

  • @7VEN glad universal sorted good cable housing for you.

I have just had repaired (somewhat heavily by Petor George) Nhatt's old Jack Taylor pursuit frame. Had a serious crack across seattube/BB join. Need to paint it now.

Old Taylors would have been box-lined, but the big repair sleeve means that may not really be worth it.

Why am I doing this? It's tiny and I want to sort out the cargobike I have coming. And keep my mrs from leaving me.

    N-1 is looming

  • PS can anyone tell me how a frame like that black one^ keeps seat post clamped? The Taylor has no pinch bolt holes either.

  • I think just a clamp like a modern frame would. You can see one on these old frames too:

    http://www.sterba-bike.cz/produkt/hobbs-of-barbican-semi-lightweight-c1950?lang=EN

I assume that's what you mean?

  • The headset is at £48 now.

  • It sold for £185.00 in the end.
    Jesus wept!

  • The 4 Lytaloy headsets arrived today. Probably sell the 'leftover' ones for what I paid for them to fellow Hobbs owners. If you're after one, give me a shout.
Got a lead on some nice old tyres and the tape, tubes and straps will be the final bits I need.
Someone convince me I should now find a better frame with original paint for all these nice bits.

  • They look great. It's good going to find one, let alone four Lytaloy headsets! I would see it as a divine sign to buy three more Hobbs frames :-)

  • Exactly! Do you mind if I ask where you got your frame from?

  • Forgive me Lord for I have sinned.
On my quest to own all the bikes in the world, I've just purchased a July 1950 Road Weight frame. More pictures to come when it arrives. Such sexy lugs and box and lug lining. All original too. Original patina. This will be the jewel in my now trifecta of Hobbs'.
I blame @thomo6, he put me on to the seller that sold him his. My brother and his wife are hopefully coming over from NZ to Eroica next year and, well, I need options.
Will need to get this one straight down to the storage locker. So many bikes in the house already. London small flat life.

  • I want to make a sin too!!
