  • about to dip my toes into SSMTB, many stupid questions incoming. looking to keep it all as cheap as possible.

    does the forum have any knowledge/opinions on ss 135mm 29er rear wheels (disc)? frame (inbred 29er) takes 10mm axle.
    hubs, this looks good value, but mini freewheel threading limits freewheel options.
    the frame I'm considering takes 2.4" tyres at max, what rim width am I looking at?

    Apart from budget, the main thing worth considering is if you want to use a screw-on freewheel, or a mini-cassette hub. I prefer the cassette type myself, as it's easier to get a perfect chainline and decent quality cogs can be bought quite cheaply.

    Cheapset way is using a basic Shimano geared hub and a singlespeed conversion kit .

  • If you go for a cassette hub, get a fat-footed sprocket so it doesn't dig into the body.
