I had to take my bike from London to Didcot (so 1 stop past Oxford) and back last weekend and it was fine both ways.
Outbound about 4pm on Sat had a proper bike coach at the front.
Inbound about 8pm on Sunday was also fine. They said there was no space but I just kind of looked at them until they let me put my bike in! Then changed at Reading for a train to Clapham Junction which had no bike space as such. Just stuck our bikes (x2) in the open section near the toilets.
